An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME. The labels and artists are often represented by trade associations in their country or region, which in turn are represented by the international trade body, the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN). Many of the labels started as producers and distributors of specific genres of music, such as jazz music, or represent something new and non-mainstream, such as Elvis Presley in the early days. Brian Causey
Brian Causey (also known as Star Crunch) is an American musician, composer and singer. He is a founding member of surf rock band Man or Astro-man? and was the main songwriter and guitarist in the band from 1991 to 1998, and from 2006 to present. He currently runs the record label Warm Electronic Recordings. His stage name is a reference to the popular snack item made by Little Debbie, ''Star Crunch''. Television work In 1996, Man or Astro-man? recorded new music for the Cartoon Network show ''Space Ghost Coast to Coast'', which was mostly used as an ending theme for the show in the late 1990s. During his departure from Man or Astro-man?, Causey composed and performed the theme song for '' Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius'' and ''The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron'', for which he was awarded a BMI Cable Award in 2003 and 2004. Azure Ray
Azure Ray is an American dream pop duo, consisting of musicians Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor. Formed in Athens, Georgia in 2001, they later moved to Omaha, Nebraska and became part of the Saddle Creek Records music scene, which also included Bright Eyes, The Faint, and Cursive. Azure Ray's music has often been featured in film and television, including '' Six Feet Under'', ''Grey's Anatomy'', and '' The Devil Wears Prada''. Biography Formation The pair met at the age of 15 while attending the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham. Japancakes
Japancakes is an American indie rock group, based in Athens, Georgia, United States. History Rhythm guitarist Eric Berg formed the band with the idea of putting ten musicians in a band without any rehearsal, and performing a D chord for 45 minutes (similar to Terry Riley's ''In C''). He continued performances with numerous instrumentalists before releasing their first recording ''If I Could See Dallas'' on Kindercore Records in 1999. The band settled into a consistent lineup on ''The Sleepy Strange,'' released in 2001, also on Kindercore. That lineup, which included pedal steel instrumentalist John Neff, drummer Brant Rackley, keyboardist Todd Kelly, bassist Nick Bielli, and cellist/keyboardist Heather MacIntosh (along with Eric Berg on guitar) also recorded 2002's ''Belmondo'' for California's Darla Records imprint. 2003 saw the departure of Todd Kelly, and 2004 saw the release of ''Waking Hours'' on the Athens label WARM Recordings. Crooked Fingers
Crooked Fingers was an American indie rock band, led by the former Archers of Loaf frontman Eric Bachmann. A vehicle for Bachmann's songwriting, the band's lineup changed between each record. Crooked Fingers released albums on WARM Records and Merge Records, and also independently. Bachmann retired the name Crooked Fingers in January 2016 with a pair of shows in New York City and Durham, NC, playing the first two records in their entirety with a string ensemble and has since been releasing albums under his name. Tim Nackashi is an American filmmaker, documentarian, and music video director. He is perhaps best known for his one-take music video for OK Go's WTF? and the documentary film Dirty Work co-directed by David Sampliner and executive produced by Edward Norton, which had its premier at the Sundance Film Festival. pacificUV is an indie rock band currently residing in Athens, Georgia. Their style is frequently categorized as utilizing elements of dream pop, post-rock, shoegazing and space rock. Parker And Lily
Parker and Lily was an American experimental pop/rock duo originally from New York, NY and formed in 2000. Parker and Lily are not currently touring and have not released any new material since 2005; the band members are all working on other projects; Parker and Lily disbanded sometime in 2005. Their style is often described as a combination of experimental, dream pop, indie rock, indie pop, slowcore and lo-fi. Phosphorescent is the stage name of American singer-songwriter Matthew Houck. Originally from Huntsville, Alabama, Houck began recording and performing under this nickname in 2001 in Athens, Georgia. He is currently based in Nashville, Tennessee. Overview Before recording under the name Phosphorescent, Matthew Houck traveled the world playing under the name Fillup Shack and self-released a limited pressing of the album ''Hipolit'' in 2000.
