Ward 1 Etobicoke North is a municipal electoral division in Etobicoke, Toronto, Ontario that has been represented in the Toronto City Council since the 2018 municipal election. It was last contested in 2018, with Michael Ford being elected councillor. The seat was declared vacant after Ford was elected to the Ontario legislature. History The ward was created in 2018 when the provincial government aligned Toronto's then-44 municipal wards with the 25 corresponding provincial and federal ridings. The current ward is an amalgamation of the old Ward 1 (northern section), the old Ward 2 (southern section). 2018 municipal election Ward 1 was first contested during the 2018 municipal election. Rexdale is a neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, located north-west of the central core, in the district of Etobicoke. Bruce Sinclair (politician)
Bruce G. Sinclair (born ) is a former politician in Toronto, Ontario. He was mayor of Etobicoke from 1984 to 1993, when he was defeated by Doug Holyday. Before becoming mayor, he served 15 years on Etobicoke's council as alderman and controller. From 1998 to 2000 he was a member of Toronto City Council, but was defeated in the 2000 Toronto municipal election. Sinclair was first elected to Etobicoke Council as alderman for Ward 3 in 1969, defeating incumbent Alec McNeil in a recount. In the 1972 election, he was elected to the borough's Board of Control, which also gave him a seat on Metro Toronto Council. He remained on the Board of Control until 1984 when he was chosen mayor by Etobicoke council, to fill a vacancy caused when incumbent mayor Dennis Flynn stepped down upon being elected Metro Toronto Chairman. 1997 Toronto Municipal Election
The 1997 Toronto municipal election was the first election held for offices in the amalgamated "megacity" of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The elections were administered by the old City of Toronto and its five suburbs within Metropolitan Toronto. The vote was held November 10, 1997, electing the mayor and 56 councillors in 28 wards who took office on January 1, 1998, the day of the amalgamation. The election resulted in a showdown between Barbara Hall, the one-term mayor of the old city of Toronto, and Mel Lastman, who had been mayor of the former Toronto suburb of North York for 25 years. 1994 Toronto Municipal Election
The 1994 Toronto municipal election was held in November 1994 to elect councillors in Metropolitan Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and mayors, councillors and school trustees in Toronto, York, East York, North York, Scarborough and Etobicoke. The election was noted as a defeat for incumbents. Three sitting mayors were defeated: June Rowlands in Toronto, Fergy Brown, in York, and Bruce Sinclair of Etobicoke. Lois Griffin (politician)
Lois Griffin (born ) is a former Metro Toronto councillor (Rexdale-Thistletown) and Chair of the Toronto Transit Commission from 1989 to 1991. She was the first woman to hold the post. In late 1999, she represented the Humber Watershed Alliance at a water workshop, as part of Toronto's city planning vision workshop series. The 1988 Toronto municipal election was held to elect members of municipal councils, school boards, and hydro commissions in the six municipalities that made up Metropolitan Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The election was held November 14, 1988. This election also marked the abolition of Boards of Control in North York, Etobicoke, Scarborough, and York. Willowridge
Richview, formally known as Willowridge-Martingrove-Richview, is a neighbourhood in the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is bounded on the west by Highway 401 and on the north by the highway and by Dixon Road, Royal York Road on the east, and Eglinton Avenue West along the south. Richview was originally established as a postal village within the then-agricultural Etobicoke Township, which later became the suburb of Etobicoke. History One part of the existing neighbourhood predates the suburbanization of the area. The first settler was William Knaggs who established his home and farm near Rich view Side road (Eglinton) and red Concession (Highway 427) in 1818. Thistletown
Thistletown is a culturally diverse neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It consists of the area surrounding the intersection of Albion Road and Islington Avenue in the former City of Etobicoke. (Etobicoke merged with five other municipalities and a regional government to form the new City of Toronto in 1998.) The borders of Thistletown are generally delineated by the Humber River: the West Branch to the south, slightly beyond the river to the east, and to the William Osler Health Centre - Etobicoke General Hospital just above the river in the north. The western border is Kipling Avenue, though the part of the neighbourhood west of Islington is sometimes considered a separate area named Beaumonde Heights. This area has seen many changes and many ethnic groups arrive and flourish. Presently the corners of Albion and Islington in Thistletown has a large presence of East Indian stores and services.
