Oliver Hardy
Oliver Norvell Hardy (born Norvell Hardy; January 18, 1892 – August 7, 1957) was an American comic actor and one half of Laurel and Hardy, the double act that began in the era of silent films and lasted from 1926 to 1957. He appeared with his comedy partner Stan Laurel in 107 short films, feature films, and cameo roles. He was credited with his first film, ''Outwitting Dad'', in 1914. In most of his silent films before joining producer Hal Roach, he was billed on screen as Babe Hardy. Early life and education Oliver Hardy was born Norvell Hardy in Harlem, Georgia. His father, Oliver, was a Confederate States Army veteran of the American Civil War who had been wounded at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862, and was a recruiting officer for Company K, 16th Georgia Regiment. Louis Burstein (1878 – March 25, 1923), sometimes credited as Louis Burston, was a film producer. He co-founded Vim Comedy Company. He was born in Russia. He led Vim and King-Bee filming operations in Jacksonville, Florida. Burstein died on March 25, 1923. He had been driving a car and racing a Southern Pacific train near Pomona, California Pomona is a city in Los Angeles County, California. Pomona is located in the Pomona Valley, between the Inland Empire and the San Gabriel Valley. At the 2020 census, the city's population was 151,713. Comedy Film
A comedy film is a category of film which emphasizes humor. These films are designed to make the audience laugh through amusement. Films in this style traditionally have a happy ending (black comedy being an exception). Comedy is one of the oldest genres in film and it is derived from the classical comedy in theatre. Some of the earliest silent films were comedies, as slapstick comedy often relies on visual depictions, without requiring sound. When sound films became more prevalent during the 1930s, comedy films took another swing, as laughter could result from burlesque situations but also dialogue. Comedy, compared with other film genres, puts much more focus on individual stars, with many former stand-up comics transitioning to the film industry due to their popularity. Vim Comedy Company
The Vim Comedy Company was a short-lived movie studio in Jacksonville, Florida and New York City. Vim bought out Siegmund Lubin's Lubin Manufacturing Company Jacksonville, Florida facilities at 750 Riverside Avenue in 1915 after that company went bankrupt. It was founded by Louis Burstein and Mark Dintenfass. Vim specialized in two-reel comedies, producing hundreds of them in the short time it existed. Notable Vim actors were Oliver Hardy, Ethel Marie Burton, Walter Stull, Billy Ruge, Rosemary Theby, Billy Bletcher and his wife Arline Roberts, and Kate Price. At its peak Vim had a workforce of nearly 50 people. The Vim Comedy Company went out of business in 1917 after Oliver Hardy discovered that both Burstein and Dintenfass were stealing from the payroll. Ethel Marie Burton
Ethel Marie Burton Palmer (October 23, 1897 - May 1985) was an American comedic film actress. Biography Burton was born in New York City and began working in films in 1915. She worked for Vitagraph, World Comedy Stars Film Company and Vim Comedy Company. She often appeared as a supporting actress in films with Billy West and Oliver Hardy. She co-starred in the first four Billy West comedies, during which time she met director Arvid E. Gillstrom. They became a couple and were married in 1917. Burton and Gillstrom divorced in 1931 and Burton continued acting under the name Ethel Gillstrom. Bud Ross
Aaron Crawford "Bud" Ross (November 8, 1868 – March 19, 1932) was an American actor, comedian, and screenwriter. Career Ross began his career in the 1880s, performing in musical comedies and vaudeville. He made his screen debut in the silent film ''The Burglar's Dilemma'' (1912) and had supporting roles in W. C. Fields's first two films, ''Pool Sharks'' and ''His Lordship's Dilemma'' (both 1915). He also supported Cissy Fitzgerald and starred in many comedies himself. At Vim Comedy Company and King-Bee Films starting in 1917, Ross supported a young Oliver Hardy and Chaplin impersonator Billy West in several comedies. Ross and Hardy co-wrote and appeared in the film '' Tootsies and Tamales'' (1919). He co-wrote many ''Peggy'' comedies in 1925.
