Wania Monteiro (born 9 August 1986) is a Cape Verdean Rhythmic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnast. Biography Born 9 August 1986 in Santa Catarina, Cape Verde, Santa Catarina, Santiago, Cape Verde, Santiago, she lived in Praia for a while. She is trained by Elena Atmacheva. ''Time (magazine), Time'' noted that she often trained "in a dilapidated gym with ceilings too low to accommodate a proper hoop or ball toss", due to a lack of adequate facilities in Cape Verde. She later moved to the USA for her studies. Sports career Monteiro Cape Verde at the 2004 Summer Olympics, represented her country at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, and was Cape Verde's flag bearer during the Games's opening ceremony. She was also the first gymnast from Cape Verde to compete in the Olympic Games. In 2006, she won four medals at the African Gymnastics Championships, three bronze and one gold, being present on all podiums during this competition. Isménia do Frederico (born 15 June 1971) is a Cape Verdean sprinter. She was the first woman to represent Cape Verde at the Olympics. Do Frederico, a two-time Olympian, first competed for Cape Verde at the 1993 World Championships where she ran the 100 metres in 13.03 seconds. Three years later at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Do Frederico made history along with António Zeferino and Henry Andrade by becoming the first athletes to represent the tiny African nation at the Olympic Games. In the women's 100 metres she finished 52nd in a time of 13.03 seconds. The following year she competed in the 1997 Francophone Games, recording her all time personal best in the 100 metres with a time of 12.75 seconds. The 2008 Summer Olympics opening ceremony was held at the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the ''Bird's Nest''. It began at 20:00 China Standard Time ( UTC+08:00) on Friday, 8 August 2008, as the number 8 is considered to be auspicious. The number 8 is associated with prosperity and confidence in Chinese culture. The artistic part of the ceremony comprised two parts titled "Brilliant Civilization" and "Glorious Era" respectively. The first part highlighted the Chinese civilization and the second part exhibited modern China and its dream of harmony between the people of the world.
