Wangki Radio
Wangki Yupurnanupurru Radio, usually shortened to Wangki Radio , is an Aboriginal community radio station based in Fitzroy Crossing, Western Australia. Wangki Radio has a weekly listenership of around 10,000 people in various communities surrounding the Fitzroy Valley and via it's networked programming. History Wangki Radio was developed in the late 1980s by Aboriginal elders and community members who saw the rapid development of media technology and wanted to ensure that their communities weren't left behind. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation, ABC helped to establish many Aboriginal Radio stations in the Kimberley (Western Australia), Kimberley, hiring Wayne Bynder, who would decades later become Wangki's manager, to assist local communities in the development of the stations. Pilbara And Kimberley Aboriginal Media
Pilbara and Kimberley Aboriginal Media (PAKAM) is an Indigenous media association based in Broome, Western Australia. PAKAM broadcasts into the northern Pilbara and the Kimberley regions. As an Indigenous media producer, PAKAM relies on and covers content within the Kimberley region and the communities within. Their service also enables the sharing of news, information, media, music, culture and broadcast events throughout their area coverage. They cover over a million square kilometres of Northwestern Australia and re-transmit their programs full-time to an audience of approximately 5,000 listeners. The Indigenous languages of Australia number in the hundreds, the precise number being quite uncertain, although there is a range of estimates from a minimum of around 250 (using the technical definition of 'language' as non-mutually intelligible varieties) up to possibly 363. The Fremantle Football Club, nicknamed the Dockers, is a professional Australian rules football club competing in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport's elite competition. ABC Kimberley
ABC Kimberley is an ABC Local Radio station based in Broome, Western Australia, owned by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Its callsign is 6BE and it transmits on AM. History Before 1986, the ABC did not have any presence in the north west of Western Australia, until the construction of 6KP Karratha. As a result, the ABC realised no presence had been created in the Kimberley, and thus plans were made to trial a twelve-month ABC station based in Broome broadcasting to the region. The station officially opened on 26 January 1990, with sole employee George Manning broadcasting from a small back-studio on 14 Napier Terrace in Broome. After the station's success, the station became a permanent broadcasting facility in 1991. National Indigenous Radio Service
The National Indigenous Radio Service (NIRS) is a satellite program feed available in Australia to Indigenous and non-Indigenous community radio stations. NIRS provides targeted and specialist programming for and by Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander broadcasters. From its base in Brisbane NIRS provides a feed of programs and music supplied by a number of contributing stations including Koori Radio, 4AAA anBBM Subscribing stations are able to re-transmit individual programs or entire blocks of program time as needed. As NIRS is broadcast 24 hours a day, stations with limited resources who are unable to provide a full-time service can use NIRS to fill the gaps between local programming.
