Wandong is a town in Victoria, Australia. The town is about north of the state capital, Melbourne, on the Hume Highway. It adjoins the town of Heathcote Junction, and at the , the two towns had a population of 1,340. The main centre nearest Wandong is Kilmore. History The traditional owners of Wandong are the Taungurong people, a part of the Kulin nation that inhabited a large portion of central Victoria including Port Phillip Bay and its surrounds. Wandong itself is an Aboriginal word meaning "Spirit". The first Europeans to reach Wandong were Hamilton Hume and Captain William Hilton Hovell who travelled through the centre of the future town of Wandong on the 13th December, 1824. Wandong Railway Station
Wandong railway station is located on the North East railway line, North East line in Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. It serves the town of Wandong, and it opened on 11 April 1876. History The station opened on 11 April 1876, as a Siding (rail), siding named Morphett's, with the North East line to Wodonga railway station, Wodonga having opened in 1872. Soon after that, a short platform was provided alongside the road level crossing, and named Wandong. In 1896, the crossing gatehouse was converted into a station building and signal box, and in 1899, a timber bridge replaced the level crossing. Sidings for timber loading were also provided, and a narrow gauge tramway brought saw timber from nearby sawmills. A permanent station building was provided in 1900, along with interlocking for the Railway signal, signals and a lever frame. The electoral district of Euroa is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly in Australia. It was created in the redistribution of electoral boundaries in 2013. It was a new district created due to the abolition of the districts of Seymour, Rodney and Benalla, taking in the areas to the north of these districts toward Shepparton. It includes the towns of Benalla, Violet Town, Euroa, Seymour, Heathcote, Nagambie, Rushworth and other towns in the Campaspe, Strathbogie, Benalla and Mitchell local government areas. Wandong Country Music Festival
The Wandong Country Music Festival was an annual country music festival held in Wandong, Victoria, north of the state capital, Melbourne. The earlier incarnation started in 1972, which was one of Australia's two largest country music festivals. In 1979 the festival's committee issued a 2× LP record by various artists, ''Wandong Country: the First Live Souvenir Recording of Australia's Top Country Artists'', via the R.I.M.S. record label, Melbourne. Dwindling crowds in the early 1980s led to the festival's cessation. In 2001 the 21st century version was inaugurated. The 2006 festival was held in early March at the LB Lavern Reserve in Dry Creek Crescent. Black Saturday Bushfires
The Black Saturday bushfires were a series of bushfires that either ignited or were already burning across the Australian state of Victoria on and around Saturday, 7 February 2009, and were among Australia's all-time worst bushfire disasters. The fires occurred during extreme bushfire weather conditions and resulted in Australia's highest-ever loss of human life from a bushfire, with 173 fatalities. Shepparton Railway Line
The Tocumwal railway line (also known as the Shepparton line) is a gauge railway line in Victoria, Australia. The line runs between the border town of Tocumwal in New South Wales to Southern Cross, Melbourne. The line is utilised by various passenger and freight trains serving the northern suburbs of Melbourne and northern regions of Victoria. History The Melbourne and Essendon Railway Company opened the first section of the Tocumwal railway line from North Melbourne to Essendon in 1860. Following its take over by the Victorian Government in 1867, the line was extended to Tallarook and Mangalore in 1872. A line was built from Mangalore to Toolamba and Shepparton in 1880 and extended to Numurkah in 1881, Strathmerton in 1905 and connecting with the New South Wales Government Railways at Tocumwal at a break-of-gauge in 1908. Albury-Wodonga Railway Line
The Albury line is a regional passenger rail service operated by V/Line in Victoria, Australia. It serves passengers between state capital Melbourne and the regional cities of Benalla, Wangaratta, Wodonga, and the NSW border city of Albury. History After February 2008, train services on the line terminated at Wangaratta station, with road coaches operating from Wangaratta to Albury. This was due to the deteriorating track conditions between Seymour and Albury which were resulting in train speeds being reduced from , and trains not being able to make the return journey in the timetabled period. On 30 May 2008, the then Premier of Victoria John Brumby announced the broad gauge track between Seymour and Albury would be converted to standard gauge, with the project to be combined with the Wodonga Rail Bypass away from the Wodonga CBD. Taungurong
The Taungurung people, also spelt ''Daung Wurrung'', are an Aboriginal people who are one of the Kulin nations in present-day Victoria, Australia. They consist of nine clans whose traditional language is the Taungurung language. Their Country is to the north of the Great Dividing Range in the watersheds of the Broken, Delatite, Coliban, Goulburn and Campaspe Rivers. They lived to the north of, and were closely associated with, the Woiwurrung speaking Wurundjeri people. Hume Highway
Hume Highway, inclusive of the sections now known as Hume Freeway and Hume Motorway, is one of Australia's major inter-city national highways, running for between Melbourne in the southwest and Sydney in the northeast. Upgrading of the route from Sydney's outskirts to Melbourne's outskirts to dual carriageway was completed on 7 August 2013. Classed as a rural seat, the electorate is located in the centre of the state, north of its capital city Melbourne.
