Wandal is a suburb of Rockhampton in the Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Wandal had a population of 3,949 people. Geography Wandal is situated about four kilometres north-west of the central business district. History The area was originally surveyed in the 1860s, shortly after the town of Rockhampton was laid out and was originally the location of several large estates built by wealthy Rockhamptonites, particularly W.H. Wiseman, John Jardine, William Knox D'Arcy and P.F. MacDonald. Closer suburban development occurred later in the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century. The Hall School, the local primary school, was established for Girls and Infants in 1910. The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart opened a Catholic primary school called St Joseph's School in 1912 or on 24 January 1916. The Rockhampton Showgrounds is a multipurpose recreational venue in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. It is situated in the suburb of Wandal. History It was opened in its current location in 1886 by the Fitzroy Pastoral, Agricultural and Horticultural Society, replacing an earlier showground in William Street. The plan for the new showground venue in Wandal, at a cost of £2000, was approved in December 1885. Facilities Since its opening in 1886, the venue has undergone numerous upgrades, improvements and additions. The Rockhampton Showgrounds currently encompasses numerous pavilions, grandstands and buildings which are located around the perimeter of the main show ring. Sisters Of St Joseph Of The Sacred Heart
The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, often called the Josephites or Brown Joeys, are a Catholic religious order founded by Saint Mary MacKillop (1842–1909). Members of the congregation use the postnominal initials RSJ (Religious Sisters of St Joseph). The order was founded in Penola, South Australia, in 1866 by Mary MacKillop and the Rev. Julian Tenison Woods. The centre of the congregation is at Mary MacKillop Place, Mount Street, North Sydney, New South Wales, where Saint Mary MacKillop's tomb is enshrined in the Mary MacKillop Memorial Chapel.
