Wanda Morgan
Wanda Morgan (22 March 1910 – 8 June 1995) was a leading English golfer of the 1930s. She won the Womens Amateur Championship in 1935, having been a runner-up in 1931. She also won the English Women's Amateur Championship three times, in 1931, 1936 and 1937. She played three times for Britain in the Curtis Cup, in 1932, 1934 and 1936 and for England in the Women's Home Internationals between 1931 and 1953. In early 1938 she took a paid position at Dunlop which resulted in the loss of her amateur status. She was reinstated as an amateur in 1949 but lost her amateur status again in 1954. Golf career Morgan first came to national notice when she reached the semi-finals of the 1929 English Women's Amateur Championship at Broadstone, losing 4&3 to Molly Gourlay. She was representing the Shrub Hill club, Chestfield. Gourlay went on the win the title, beating Diana Fishwick in the final. Lymm is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Warrington, Cheshire, England, which incorporates the hamlets of Booths Hill, Broomedge, Church Green, Deansgreen, Heatley, Heatley Heath, Little Heatley, Oughtrington, Reddish, Rushgreen and Statham. Portmarnock Golf Club is a links golf club in Portmarnock, County Dublin, Ireland, located close to Dublin Airport. The golf course is often rated as one of the top courses in the UK and Ireland and is also often included in lists of the top 100 golf courses in the world. History On Christmas Eve 1893, an insurance broker named W. C. Pickeman and his friend George Ross rowed over from Sutton to Portmarnock peninsula to explore the possibility of creating a golf links. The peninsula is about two miles long and covers over 500 acres. The course opened on Saint Stephen's Day 1894 with nine holes. It was extended to eighteen holes in 1896 with a new clubhouse and a further nine holes were added in 1971. The 2nd Curtis Cup Match was played on September 27 and 28, 1934 at the Chevy Chase Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The United States won 6 to 2. Format The contest was played over two days, with three foursomes on the first day and six singles matches on the second day, a total of 9 points. Matches were over 18 holes. Each of the 9 matches was worth one point in the larger team competition. If a match was all square after the 18th hole extra holes were not played. Rather, each side earned a point toward their team total. The team that accumulated at least 5 points won the competition. Teams Eight players for the USA and for Great Britain & Ireland participated in the event. Diana Jessie Merville Plumpton (married name Sabine, 4 May 1911 – 8 May 1973) was an English amateur golfer. She reached the final of the 1933 Women's Amateur Championship and played in the 1934 Curtis Cup. Golf career In 1929 Plumpton reached the quarter-finals of the Girls Amateur Championship at Stoke Poges, losing to Joan Mitchell at the 20th hole. In 1930 she reached the third round of the Women's Amateur Championship and the fourth round of the English Women's Amateur Championship. The 1st Curtis Cup Match was played on 21 May 1932 at Wentworth Golf Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England. The United States won 5 to 3. The match was played on the East course, measuring about 6,000 yards. The foursomes began at 10:30 am and the singles at 2 pm. All the match pairings were announced the previous day. Britain used all 8 of their players while the Americans used the same six in both sessions. Oxhey Golf Club was a golf club located near Watford in Hertfordshire, England. The Harry Vardon designed 18-hole golf course was host to several important tournaments including the News of the World Match Play and the McVitie & Price Tournament.
