Wananalua Congregational Church
The Wananalua Congregational Church is a historic 19th-century building on the remote coast of Maui in Hawaii. History Wānanalua was the name of a traditional land division ( ''ahupuaa'') on the eastern coast of the island of Maui. The name means "double prophecy" in the Hawaiian language. The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions established a mission at the site in 1838. First residents were Daniel Toll Conde, and his wife Andelucia Lee Conde. Reverend Mark Ives (1809–1885) served at the station until 1840. In 1841 William Harrison Rice and his wife arrived, who stayed until 1844. In 1848 the Condes moved to the Kaahumanu Church in Wailuku, and in 1855 after the death of his wife, Conde moved to Beloit, Wisconsin. Eliphalet W. Whittlesey (1816–1889) was stationed at the church from 1844 to 1854, and William Otis Baldwin from 1855 to 1860. Sereno Edwards Bishop (1827–1909) and his wife Cornelia A. Hana Highway
The Hana Highway (colloquially referred to as The Road to Hana) is a stretch of Hawaii Routes 36 and 360 which connects Kahului to the town of Hana in east Maui. To the east of Kalepa Bridge, the highway continues to Kipahulu as Hawaii Route 31 (the Piilani Highway). Although Hana is only about from Kahului, an uninterrupted car-trip takes about 2.5 hours to drive, since the highway is very windy, narrow, and passes over 59 bridges, of which 46 are only one lane wide. There are approximately 620 curves along Route 360 from just east of Kahului to Hana, almost all of it through lush, tropical rainforest. Many of the concrete and steel bridges date back to 1910 and all but one are still in use. Cinder Cone
A cinder cone (or scoria cone) is a steep conical hill of loose pyroclastic fragments, such as volcanic clinkers, volcanic ash, or scoria that has been built around a volcanic vent. The pyroclastic fragments are formed by explosive eruptions or lava fountains from a single, typically cylindrical, vent. As the gas-charged lava is blown violently into the air, it breaks into small fragments that solidify and fall as either cinders, clinkers, or scoria around the vent to form a cone that often is symmetrical; with slopes between 30 and 40°; and a nearly circular ground plan. Ancient Hawaii
Ancient Hawaii is the period of Hawaiian history preceding the unification in 1810 of the Kingdom of Hawaii by Kamehameha the Great. Traditionally, researchers estimated the first settlement of the Hawaiian islands as having occurred sporadically between 400 and 1100 CE by Polynesian long-distance navigators from the Samoan, Marquesas, and Tahiti islands within what is now French Polynesia. Red Sand Beach
Red Sand Beach, Kaihalulu Beach, is a pocket beach located on Kaihalulu Bay. It is on the island of Maui, Hawaii, on Kauiki Head. Location Kaihalulu Bay and Red Sand Beach lie at , on the side of Ka'uiki Head, which is a cinder cone just south of Hana Bay, on the eastern coast of Maui island. The bay name comes from ''kai halulu'' which means "roaring sea" in the Hawaiian language. The hill name comes from ''ka uiki'' which means "the glimmer". It was the site of a fortress and temple ('' heiau'') where several battles were fought against invaders from Hawaii island. It was also the birthplace of powerful civil leader Queen Kaahumanu.
