Waltraud Hunke
Waltraud Hunke (28 April 1915 – 2004) was a German philologist, publisher and philanthropist who specialized in Germanic studies. Biography Waltraud Hunke was born in Kiel, Germany on 28 April 1915, the daughter of the publisher (1879-1953) and Hildegard Lau (1879-1944). Her mother was the daughter of engineer Thies Peter Lau (1844-1933) and Walewska Berta Anna Artelt (1856-1943). She had two sisters, including Sigrid Hunke. Hunke received her Ph.D. in Germanic philology at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 1941 under the supervision of Otto Höfler. She subsequently worked as an assistant to the historian Ernst Anrich and philologist Siegfried Gutenbrunner at Reichsuniversität Straßburg. After World War II, Hunke returned to her hometown of Kiel, where she made a fortune as a publisher and bookstore owner. Heinrich Beck (born 2 April 1929 - 5 June 2019) was a German philologist who specialized in Germanic studies. A Professor of Ancient German and Nordic Studies at Saarland University and later the University of Bonn, Beck was a co-editor of the second edition of ''Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde'' and one of the world's leading experts on early Germanic culture. Siegfried Gutenbrunner
Siegfried Gutenbrunner (26 May 1906 – 23 November 1984) was an Austrian philologist who specialized in Germanic studies. Biography Siegfried Gutenbrunner was born in Vienna, Austria on 26 May 1906. He gained his PhD in Germanistics at the University of Vienna in 1931. After gaining his habilitation at Vienna, Gutenbrunner served there as Privatdozent (1936–1939) and Docent (1939–1943). Since 1943, Gutenbrunner was associate professor of Germanic and Scandinavian studies at the Reichsuniversität Straßburg. After the end of World War II, held a chair at the University of Kiel. Since 1950, Gutenbrunner served as associate professor (1950–1955) and professor (1955–1975) of Germanic and Nordic philology at the University of Freiburg. At Freiburg, Gutenbrunner founded the Seminar for Scandinavian Studies in 1963. Gutenbrunner retired as professor emeritus in 1975, and died in Freiburg on 23 November 1984.
