Waltham High School
Waltham High School is a public high school located in Waltham, Massachusetts, United States. It is the only high school operated by Waltham Public Schools. History The current Waltham High School was constructed in 1968 and expanded in 1998 and 2002. In 2018, Waltham Public Schools exercised eminent domain to buy land for a new Waltham High School. A $374 million loan for a new high school project was approved in 2019; it was the largest loan in Massachusetts history for a public high school. Construction started in September 2020, with the goal of having the new high school finished by the 2024-2025 school year. The school was originally slated to open for the 2020-21 school year before numerous issues in the site plan, acquisition, design and construction processes shifted the opening date back. Anthony Ezio Massarotti (born October 28, 1967) is an American author and a former sportswriter for the ''Boston Herald'' and ''The Boston Globe''. He co-hosts a sports talk radio show, '' Felger & Mazz'', on 98.5 The Sports Hub with former ''Boston Herald'' columnist Michael Felger. Massarotti has also served as a color commentator for the Boston Red Sox, during their 2022 season. Hal Kopp
Harold W. Kopp (January 19, 1909 – May 10, 1998) was an American football coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of Rhode Island, Brigham Young University (BYU), and Bentley University, compiling a career college football record of 51–39–6. At Rhode Island, Kopp led the Rams to three Yankee Conference titles in five seasons (two shared, one outright). When they won their first title in 1952, it was the first championship in the Rhode Island football program's history. In 1955, he led them to the program's first bowl game, the Refrigerator Bowl, where the Rams lost, 12–10, to Jacksonville State. As the coach of the BYU Cougars football team, Kopp produced winning records in his last two seasons, but was dismissed from the university when rumors surfaced that he had committed a potential NCAA rules infraction. Joe Zeno
Joseph H. Zeno (June 14, 1919 – January 8, 1992) was an American football guard in the National Football League (NFL) for the Washington Redskins and the Boston Yanks. Early life Zeno was born in Brooklyn, New York and played high school football at Waltham High School in Waltham, Massachusetts. He then went on to play college football at the College of the Holy Cross. Professional career Zeno was drafted in the fifth round of the 1942 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins, where he played until 1944. During his tenure with the Redskins, he was named to the Pro Bowl in 1942 and won the 1942 NFL Championship Game. Zeno then took time off to serve in the United States Army during World War II. He then played for two more seasons with the Boston Yanks. Fred Smerlas
Frederic Charles Smerlas (born April 8, 1957) is a former American football nose tackle who was a five-time NFL Pro Bowl selection during a 14-year career as a nose tackle with the Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots. Smerlas, of Greek-American descent, graduated from Waltham High School in 1975, where he was a star football player and wrestler. He became a defensive lineman for Boston College before embarking on an NFL career. Smerlas' 1990 autobiography, ''By a Nose'', recounts his 11 years with the Bills and their climb from cellar-dwellers to Super Bowl contenders. Smerlas currently resides in Massachusetts and is a part-time co-host during football season on sports radio WEEI-FM, NBC Sports Boston - The New England Tailgate Show, as well as a contributor to western New York radio station WHAM (AM) in Rochester. Normie Roy
Norman Brooks Roy III (November 15, 1928 – March 22, 2011) was a Major League Baseball pitcher. Nicknamed "Jumbo" and listed at and , he batted and threw right-handed. Roy was born in Newton, Massachusetts, and grew up in Waltham, where he attended Waltham High School. He was signed by the Boston Braves in 1947, and spent four years with Class-B Pawtucket Slaters (1947) and AAA Milwaukee Brewers (1948–49, 1951) before joining the Braves in the 1950 season. Roy posted a 4–3 record and a 5.13 ERA in 19 appearances for the Braves, including six starts, two complete games and one save. He allowed 38 runs (34 earned) on 72 hits and 39 walks while striking out 25 in 59 innings of work. Roy later returned to the Brewers (1951) and also played for AA Atlanta Crackers (1952). Michael Anthony Mangini (born April 18, 1963) is an American musician and current drummer of the progressive metal band Dream Theater. He has also played for bands and artists such as Annihilator, Extreme, James LaBrie, and Steve Vai. Before joining Dream Theater, Mangini was a faculty member at Berklee College of Music. Arlington High School is a public high school located in Arlington, Massachusetts. As of 2010, the school enrolls approximately 1,300 students annually. The current principal is Matthew Janger. Currently being rebuilt. History The current Arlington High School, designed by Howard B.S. Prescott, was opened in 1915 for grades 10–12. What is now known as "Fusco house" was the only original building. Boys and girls were required to enter the building through two separate entrances. Two additions were later added on, the "Collomb house," as it is now known, in 1937 and then the "Downs house." Peirce Field, an outdoor field for football, soccer, track, field hockey, lacrosse, baseball and softball, was created by filling in "Cutter's Pond", which had been previously used for milling. Jeffrey Adam Lazaro (born March 21, 1968) is an American former professional ice hockey player. Biography As a youth, Lazaro played in the 1981 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Boston Braves minor ice hockey team.
