Walter Thomas (baseball)
Walter Lewis Thomas (October 22, 1911 – September 28, 1983), nicknamed "Bancy", was an American Negro league pitcher in the 1930s and 1940s. A native of Doyle, Alabama, Thomas was the brother of fellow Negro leaguer Orrel Thomas. He made his Negro leagues debut in 1935 with the Chicago American Giants, and later played for the Detroit Stars, Kansas City Monarchs, and Birmingham Black Barons. Following his Negro league career, Thomas played for the Carman Cardinals of the Mandak League for several seasons in the early 1950s. He died in Big Rapids, Michigan in 1983 at age 71. Walter Purl "Foots" Thomas (February 10, 1907 – August 26, 1981) was an American saxophonist, flutist, and arranger in Cab Calloway's orchestra, one of the most famous bands of the swing era in jazz. Early life Born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Thomas moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he played in Ed Allen's Whispering Band of Gold in the early 1920s. In 1924, he recorded with Fate Marable's Society Orchestra. Career In 1927, Thomas moved to New York City, where he played with the New Orleans pianist and composer Jelly Roll Morton and Joe Steele. He then joined The Missourians in 1929, just before Calloway took the band over. Among his arrangements was Calloway's 1931 hit song, "Minnie the Moocher." In 1943, he left Calloway's orchestra to work with the saxophonist and composer Don Redman. Walter Aubrey Thomas (1864, Birkenhead, Cheshire – 1934, Wirral Peninsula, Wirral, Cheshire) (also known as Aubrey Thomas) was an English architect who practised from an office in Dale Street, Liverpool. For his training he was articled to the Liverpool architect Francis Doyle, and established his own independent practice in about 1876. His works consisted mainly of commercial buildings. He has been described as "the most individual Liverpool architect of the early 1900s". At least seven of his works are designated by English Heritage as listed buildings, and these are included in the list below, of which the most notable is the Grade I listed Royal Liver Building. Sharples and Pollard in the ''Pevsner Architectural Guides'' state that "his work shows admirable inventiveness and stylistic variety, as well as ambition matched by technological resourcefulness". Walter Brandon Thomas (24 December 1848 – 19 June 1914) was an English actor, playwright and songwriter, best known as the author of the farce ''Charley's Aunt''. Born in Liverpool to a family with no theatrical connections, Thomas worked in commerce, and as an occasional journalist, before achieving his ambition of becoming an actor. After a succession of minor roles, he became increasingly sought after as a character actor. He also wrote more than a dozen plays, the most celebrated of which, ''Charley's Aunt'' (1892), broke all historic records for plays of any kind, with an original London run of 1,466 performances and numerous subsequent productions all around the world, film and musical theatre adaptations. Major General Walter Babington "Sandy" Thomas, (29 June 1919 – 22 October 2017) was a New Zealand-born British Army officer, who served as General Officer Commanding Far East Land Forces from 1970 to 1971. He previously served with the New Zealand Military Forces in the Second World War, where he was decorated, wounded and, at age 24, became the youngest New Zealand battalion commander of the war. Military career Thomas was born in Motueka, New Zealand, on 29 June 1919. He was commissioned into the New Zealand Military Forces at the outbreak of the Second World War. During his service in the Middle East, Thomas was wounded, became a prisoner of war in Crete, escaped from a prison hospital, fled to Syria, and was awarded the Military Cross and Bar. As a temporary major he received the Distinguished Service Order in 1943, and rose to command the 23rd Battalion in Italy to become, at age 24, the youngest New Zealand battalion commander in the war. Walter Horstmann Thomas (1876–1948) was an American architect from Philadelphia whose career spanned 44 years. He is best known for approximately eighty church designs. Early life Thomas was the younger of two children of Richard Newton Thomas, an Episcopal priest who served several Philadelphia parishes, and Clara Horstmann. Thomas was educated in private schools, including the Hamilton School and Episcopal Academy. Grand tour On December 29, 1888, Thomas’ twelfth birthday, his family sailed from New York for a six-month trip to Europe, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Greece and Turkey. Thomas kept a diary of this adventure that documents observations of the people and places he saw. The Ven. Walter Thomas was a Church of Ireland priest in the first half of the 18th century. Biography Walter Thomas was born in Athlone and educated at Trinity College there. He was Archdeacon of Killaloe from 1714 to 1715.
