Walter Spring
Walter Spring the Unfortunate (1620 – c.1678) was an Anglo-Irish Roman Catholic landowner involved in the Irish Confederate Wars. Biography Spring was the son of Thomas Spring, a lawyer. He was the grandson of Walter Spring, who had served as High Sheriff of Kerry, and the great-grandson of Captain Thomas Spring, Constable of Castlemaine. He inherited the family estates in County Kerry from his father, including Killagha Abbey, where he was born and brought up. Unlike the previous generations of his family, Walter Spring was raised as a Catholic. His control of the strategic fortress at Castlemaine and the lands surrounding Milltown made him an important figure in Kerry. He attended the 1642 Kilkenny meeting of Catholic gentry which established the Association of the Confederate Catholics of Ireland and was active in helping to organise the war effort on behalf of the Catholic rebels. Killagha Abbey
Killagha Abbey of Our Lady of Bello Loco, also called Kilcolman Abbey, is a ruined Augustinians, Augustinian abbey and former manor house in County Kerry, Ireland. The abbey is situated one and a half miles north-west of Milltown, County Kerry, Milltown on the banks of the River Maine (County Kerry), River Maine. History The abbey was founded in circa 1216 on the site of an earlier monastery, which had been erected by Colmán of Cloyne, Saint Colman. This earlier foundation gave rise to the abbey sometimes being called Kilcolman, meaning Church of Colman. The abbey was established by Geoffrey de Marisco, Justicier of Ireland, an Anglo-Normans, Anglo-Norman nobleman who had received large grants of land in Munster from John, King of England. The Protectorate
The Protectorate, officially the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland, refers to the period from 16 December 1653 to 25 May 1659 during which England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and associated territories were joined together in the Commonwealth of England, governed by a Lord Protector. It began when Barebone's Parliament was dismissed, and the Instrument of Government appointed Oliver Cromwell Lord Protector of the Commonwealth. Cromwell died in September 1658 and was succeeded by his son Richard Cromwell. Richard resigned in May 1659 due to his inability to control either the Army or Parliament. He was replaced by the English Committee of Safety, which dissolved the Third Protectorate Parliament, and reseated the so-called Rump Parliament dismissed by Cromwell in April 1653.
