Walter R. Cooney Jr.
Walter R. Cooney Jr. is an American chemical engineer, amateur astronomer and discoverer of minor planets and variable stars. Cooney, who is affiliated with the Highland Road Park Observatory, is credited by the Minor Planet Center with the discovered of 47 numbered minor planets during 1998–2005, such as his lowest numbered identification 11739 Baton Rouge, a Hilda asteroid, Hildian asteroid named after the city of Baton Rouge where the discovering observatory is located. Many of his minor planet discoveries he made in collaboration with astronomers Matthew Collier (astronomer), Matthew Collier, Patrick M. Motl, Susannah Lazar, Katrina Wefel, Terry Martin (astronomer), Terry Martin, Merrill Hess, Ethan Kandler, Meredith Howard, and most recently with John Gross (astronomer), John Gross. Cooney is also credited with discovering more than 50 variable stars. List of discovered minor planets References 20th-century American astronomers 21st ... Minor Planet
According to the International Astronomical Union (IAU), a minor planet is an astronomical object in direct orbit around the Sun that is exclusively classified as neither a planet nor a comet. Before 2006, the IAU officially used the term ''minor planet'', but that year's meeting reclassified minor planets and comets into dwarf planets and small Solar System bodies (SSSBs).Press release, IAU 2006 General Assembly: Result of the IAU Resolution votes International Astronomical Union, August 24, 2006. 1 (one, unit, unity) is a number representing a single or the only entity. 1 is also a numerical digit and represents a single unit of counting or measurement. For example, a line segment of ''unit length'' is a line segment of length 1. In conventions of sign where zero is considered neither positive nor negative, 1 is the first and smallest positive integer. It is also sometimes considered the first of the infinite sequence of natural numbers, followed by 2, although by other definitions 1 is the second natural number, following 0. The fundamental mathematical property of 1 is to be a multiplicative identity, meaning that any number multiplied by 1 equals the same number. Most if not all properties of 1 can be deduced from this. In advanced mathematics, a multiplicative identity is often denoted 1, even if it is not a number. 1 is by convention not considered a prime number; this was not universally accepted until the mid-20th century. Additionally, 1 is th ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

79912 Terrell
79912 Terrell, provisional designation , is a dark Adeonian asteroid from the central regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 6 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 10 February 1999, by astronomers Walter Cooney and Ethan Kandler at the Highland Road Park Observatory, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States. The asteroid was named after American astrophysicist Dirk Terrell. Orbit and classification ''Terrell'' is a member of the Adeona family (), a large family of carbonaceous asteroids in the central main belt, named after 145 Adeona. It orbits the Sun at a distance of 2.2–3.1 AU once every 4 years and 5 months (1,599 days). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.16 and an inclination of 11 ° with respect to the ecliptic. The body's observation arc begins with its identification as by AMOS at Haleakala Observatory in August 1996, more than two years prior to its official discovery observation at Baton Rouge.
