Walter Nugent (historian)
Sir Walter Richard Nugent, 4th Baronet (12 December 1865 – 12 November 1955) was an Irish baronet, politician and member of parliament (MP) in the House of Commons from 1907 to 1918. Nugent was elected unopposed to the House of Commons as an Irish Parliamentary Party MP for South Westmeath at a by-election in 1907, and held the seat through the January and December 1910 elections, until 1918. At the 1918 general election, he ran as an independent nationalist candidate in the Westmeath constituency but was defeated by Sinn Féin's Laurence Ginnell. In 1896, he had succeeded to the baronetcy of Donore in Multyfarnham, County Westmeath. He was a member of Seanad Éireann of the Irish Free State from 1928 to 1931. Seanad Éireann (Irish Free State)
Seanad Éireann (; ''Senate of Ireland'') was the upper house of the Oireachtas (Irish Free State), Oireachtas (parliament) of the Irish Free State from 1922 to 1936. It has also been known simply as the Senate, First Seanad, Free State Senate or Free State Seanad. The Senate was established under the 1922 Constitution of the Irish Free State but a number of constitutional amendments were subsequently made to change the manner of its election and its powers. It was eventually abolished in 1936 when it attempted to obstruct constitutional reforms favoured by the government. It sat, like its modern successor, in Leinster House. Laurence Ginnell
Laurence Ginnell (baptised 9 April 1852 – 17 April 1923) was an Irish nationalist politician, lawyer and Member of Parliament (MP) of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland as member of the Irish Parliamentary Party for Westmeath North at the 1906 UK general election. From 1910 he sat as an Independent Nationalist and at the 1918 general election he was elected for Sinn Féin. Early life Ginnell was born in Delvin, County Westmeath, in 1852, the son of Laurence Ginnell and Mary Monaghan and twin to Michael Ginnell. He was self-educated and was called to the Irish bar as well as the Bar of England and Wales. In his youth, he was involved with the Land War and acted as private secretary to John Dillon. A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown.
