Walter Niemann (American Football)
Walter Albert "Wallie" Niemann (April 21, 1894 – December 5, 1967) was an American football player. A native of Menominee in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Niemann was an all around athlete at Menominee High School in Menominee, Michigan. He played center for the Michigan Wolverines football team from 1915 to 1916. He was the lightest starting center at the University of Michigan at 150 pounds. He played semi-professional football for the Lauerman Twins in 1921. The 1921 Twins team won the championship of Northeastern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula. He later played professional football for the Green Bay Packers from 1922 to 1924. Niemann was the starting center for Green Bay in the first game played between the Packers and the Chicago Bears. Niemann was inducted into the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame in 1974. Hermansville, Michigan
Hermansville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Meyer Township of Menominee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 509. The community formed around the defunct Wisconsin Land & Lumber Company as a company town. The company's former headquarters is open as the IXL Historical Museum. US Highway 2 (US 2) passes through the north edge of the community. History The village of Hermansville was founded in 1878 by C.J.L. Meyer of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, who built and operated a saw and shingle mill utilizing the abundant native cedar and pine growing in the area. The community was named for the son of the original owner of the town site. In 1883 Meyer organized the Wisconsin Land & Lumber Company, which acquired the mill and landholdings, and began working on methods of utilizing the abundant hardwood timber on the surrounding lands held by the company. Center or Centre (C) is a position in gridiron football. The center is the innermost lineman of the offensive line on a football team's offense. The Michigan Wolverines football team represents the University of Michigan in college football at the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision level. Michigan has the most all-time wins in college football history. The 1915 Michigan Wolverines football team was an American football team that represented the University of Michigan as an independent during the 1915 college football season. In its 15th season under head coach was Fielding H. Yost the team compiled a 4–3–1 record and outscored opponents by a total of 130 to 81. After winning its first four games, the Wolverines lost three consecutive games. Right guard William D. Cochran was the team captain. Key players included left halfback John Maulbetsch, quarterback Lawrence Roehm, fullback Cedric C. Smith, center Walter Niemann, and guard Frank Millard. The 1916 Michigan Wolverines football team represented the University of Michigan in the 1916 college football season. In his 16th year as head coach, Fielding H. Yost led Michigan to a 7–2 record, as the Wolverines outscored their opponents by a combined score of 253 to 56. Michigan held its first five opponents to a combined total of three points and won its first seven games by a combined score of 227 to 23. The team then lost its final two games, each game by a margin of only three points, against Cornell and Penn. Michigan's leading scorer was left halfback John Maulbetsch with 89 kicks for on 11 touchdowns, 20 points after touchdown (PAT) and a field goal. Maulbetsch was also the team's captain.
