Walter J. Davis Jr.
Walter Jackson Davis Jr. (born 1 August 1936) is a retired vice admiral (United States), vice admiral in the United States Navy who served as Director of Space and Electronic Warfare in the Structure of the United States Navy#Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO). From 28 February 1996 until his retirement on 1 January 1997, he was U.S. naval aviation's Gray Eagle Award, Gray Eagle. Davis was the second African American to become the most senior naval aviator on active duty. Early life and education Born on 1 August 1936, Davis was raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He attended the Ohio State University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1959. In the United States, commander is a military rank that is also sometimes used as a military billet title—the designation of someone who manages living quarters or a base—depending on the branch of service. Poway () is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The unincorporated community became a city on December 1, 1980. Poway's rural roots influenced its motto "The City in the Country".
