Walter Hochschild
Walter Hochschild (September 27, 1900 – February 1, 1983) was an American industrialist, having spent 63 years as an executive with the American Metal Company (later AMAX), founded by his father, Berthold Hochschild. He became president of the company in 1950 and chairman and chief executive officer in 1957. He served as a trustee of the Museum of the City of New York for thirty years, and as a lifelong senior trustee of the United States Council of the International Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1947. He built Eagle Nest camp in Blue Mountain Lake, New York, an Adirondack Great Camp. Personal life He was married to Kathrin Samstag Hochschild; they had three daughters: Patricia Hochschild Labalme, Lynn Hochschild Boillot, and Ann Hochschild Poole. Berthold Hochschild
Berthold Hochschild (March 6, 1860 – January 24, 1928) was a mining magnate, a founder of the American Metal Company, and a philanthropist. Biography Hochschild was born to a Jewish family in Biblis, Germany, the son of Auguste Gustina (née Bendheim) and Koppel Jakob Hochschild. In 1881, his brother Zachary Hochschild, along with his cousin Wilhelm Ralph Merton and Leo Ellinger, founded Metallgesellschaft AG Metallgesellschaft AG was formerly one of Germany's largest industrial conglomerates based in Frankfurt. __NOTOC__ The Great Camps of the Adirondack Mountains refers to the grandiose family compounds of cabins that were built in the latter half of the nineteenth century on lakes in the Adirondacks such as Spitfire Lake and Rainbow Lake. The camps were summer homes for the wealthy, where they could relax, host or attend parties, and enjoy the wilderness. Institute For Advanced Study
The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), located in Princeton, New Jersey, in the United States, is an independent center for theoretical research and intellectual inquiry. It has served as the academic home of internationally preeminent scholars, including J. Robert Oppenheimer, Albert Einstein, Hermann Weyl, John von Neumann, and Kurt Gödel, many of whom had emigrated from Europe to the United States. It was founded in 1930 by American educator Abraham Flexner, together with philanthropists Louis Bamberger and Caroline Bamberger Fuld. Patricia Hochschild Labalme
Patricia Hochschild Labalme (February 26, 1927 – October 11, 2002) was an American historian and executive director of the Renaissance Society of America. Early life and education Hochschild was born in New York City, the daughter of industrialist Walter Hochschild and Kathrin Samstag Hochschild. Her grandfather was Berthold Hochschild, and her uncle as Harold K. Hochschild. She graduated from the Brearley School in 1944, and from Bryn Mawr College in 1948. At Harvard University, she earned a master's degree in 1950 and a PhD in 1958. Her dissertation, ''Bernardo Giustiniani; a Venetian of the Quattrocento'', won the Caroline Wilby Prize. Career Labalme taught history at Wellesley College from 1952 to 1959, and at Barnard College from 1961 to 1977. She was an adjunct professor at Hunter College in 1979, and at New York University from 1980 to 1982 and from 1986 to 1987. Blue Mountain Lake is an affluent hamlet in the town of Indian Lake of Hamilton County, New York, United States, at the intersection of New York Routes 28, 28N and 30. Blue Mountain Lake also refers to the lake on the banks of which the hamlet is situated. Blue Mountain Lake is approximately north of Utica and about northwest of Albany. The place is named after the mountain peak, Blue Mountain.
