Walter De Haas
Walter de Haas (1886–1969), who wrote under the pseudonym Hanns Günther, was a prolific German author, translator, and editor of popular science books. He began to publish books in 1912, including introductions to topics in electrical engineering under the '' Franckh'schen Verlagshandlung'' imprint and popular science works in the same publisher's ''Kosmos series''. His books remain exemplary for their combination of exactness and ease of understanding. Today, his most important book is considered to be "In a hundred years: the world's future energy supply" (''In hundert Jahren - Die künftige Energieversorgung der Welt''), which was published in 1931 for Franckh's "Friends of Nature Club" (''Gesellschaft der Naturfreunde''). Franckh-Kosmos Verlags-GmbH & Co. is a media publishing house based in Stuttgart, Germany, founded in 1822 by Johann Friedrich Franckh. In the nineteenth century the company published the fairy tales of Wilhelm Hauff as well as works by Wilhelm Waiblinger and Eduard Mörike. The "Friends of Nature Club" () was set up in 1903 in response to booming public interest in science and technology, and by 1912 100,000 members were receiving its monthly magazine "Cosmos" (''Kosmos''). The company moved into publishing books on popular science topics under the brands ''Franckh’sche Verlagshandlung'' and ''KOSMOS'', including successful non-fiction guidebooks by Hanns Günther and Heinz Richter. Solar Updraft Tower
The solar updraft tower (SUT) is a design concept for a renewable-energy power plant for generating electricity from low temperature solar heat. Sunshine heats the air beneath a very wide greenhouse-like roofed collector structure surrounding the central base of a very tall chimney tower. The resulting convection causes a hot air updraft in the tower by the chimney effect. This airflow drives wind turbines, placed in the chimney updraft or around the chimney base, to produce electricity. Wave power is the capture of energy of wind waves to do useful work – for example, electricity generation, water desalination, or pumping water. A machine that exploits wave power is a wave energy converter (WEC). Waves are generated by wind passing over the sea's surface. As long as the waves propagate slower than the wind speed just above, energy is transferred from the wind to the waves. Air pressure differences between the windward and leeward sides of a wave crest and surface friction from the wind cause shear stress and wave growth. Wave power is distinct from tidal power, which captures the energy of the current caused by the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon. Heinz Richter (1 November 1909 – 14 May 1971) was a German radio engineer and one of the most successful authors of introductory-level radio and electronics textbooks in Germany from the 1950s throughout the 1970s. Biography Born in Gehrden, Germany, Richter was influenced early by the books of Walther de Haas (" Hanns Günther"). He enrolled in the ''Höhere Technische Lehranstalt'' in Munich, from which he graduated as Engineer in 1932. Already in 1934, in cooperation with Günther, Richter published his first textbook for radio engineers, ''Schule des Funktechnikers'', which immediately became popular. This was soon followed by a revised edition of Günther's classic, ''Elektrotechnik für Jungen'' (Electronics for Boys). Fritz Kahn
Fritz Kahn (29 September 1888 – 14 January 1968) was a German-Jewish physician who published popular science books and is known for his illustrations, which pioneered infographics. Biography Fritz Kahn was born in Halle an der Saale, Germany, the son of Arthur Kahn, a physician and author, and Hedwig Kahn, ''née'' Schmuhl. His father emigrated to the USA shortly after his birth, settling in Hoboken, New Jersey. Around 1893, after establishing his practise, he sent for his wife and son, and Fritz Kahn started school there. The family later moved to Manhattan, but in 1895 his mother returned to Germany with her three children.
