Walter Borho
Walter Borho (born 17 December 1945, in Hamburg) is a German mathematician, who works on algebra and number theory. Borho received his PhD in 1973 from the University of Hamburg under the direction of Ernst Witt with thesis ''Wesentliche ganze Erweiterungen kommutativer Ringe''. He is a professor at the University of Wuppertal. Borho does research on representation theory, Lie algebras, ring theory and also on number theory (amicable numbers) and tilings. In 1986 he was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berkeley (''Nilpotent orbits, primitive ideals and characteristic classes – a survey''). Robert MacPherson (mathematician)
Robert Duncan MacPherson (born May 25, 1944) is an American mathematician at the Institute for Advanced Study and Princeton University. He is best known for the invention of intersection homology with Mark Goresky, whose thesis he directed at Brown University, and who became his life partner. MacPherson previously taught at Brown University, the University of Paris, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1983 he gave a plenary address at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Warsaw. Education and career Educated at Swarthmore College and Harvard University, MacPherson received his PhD from Harvard in 1970. His thesis, written under the direction of Raoul Bott, was entitled ''Singularities of Maps and Characteristic Classes''. Among his many PhD students are Kari Vilonen and Mark Goresky. Jean-Luc Brylinski
Jean-Luc Brylinski (born in 1951) is a French- American mathematician. Educated at the Lycée Pasteur and the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, after an appointment as researcher with the C. N. R. S., he became a Professor of Mathematics at Pennsylvania State University. He proved the Kazhdan–Lusztig conjectures with Masaki Kashiwara. He has also worked on gerbes, cyclic homology, Quillen bundles, and geometric class field theory, among other geometric and algebraic topics. Pierre Gabriel
Pierre Gabriel (1 August 1933 – 24 November 2015), also known as Peter Gabriel, was a French mathematician at the University of Strasbourg (1962–1970), University of Bonn (1970–1974) and University of Zürich (1974–1998) who worked on category theory, algebraic groups, and representation theory of algebras. He was elected a correspondent member of the French Academy of Sciences in November 1986. Don Bernard Zagier (born 29 June 1951) is an American-German mathematician whose main area of work is number theory. He is currently one of the directors of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, Germany. He was a professor at the ''Collège de France'' in Paris from 2006 to 2014. Since October 2014, he is also a Distinguished Staff Associate at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). Background Zagier was born in Heidelberg, West Germany. Euclidean plane tilings by convex regular polygons have been widely used since antiquity. The first systematic mathematical treatment was that of Kepler in his ''Harmonices Mundi'' (Latin: ''The Harmony of the World'', 1619).
