Walter Bingle
Walter David Bingle (12 April 18617 August 1928) was a senior Australian public servant, best known for his time as head of the Department of Works and Railways. Life and career Bingle was born in Newcastle, New South Wales on 12 April 1861. For schooling he attended Newcastle Grammar School, before starting work in his father's shipping agency. At Federation, Bingle joined the Commonwealth Public Service as a chief clerk in the Department of Home Affairs. Imperial Service Order
The Imperial Service Order was established by King Edward VII in August 1902. It was awarded on retirement to the administration and clerical staff of the Civil Service throughout the British Empire for long and meritorious service. Normally a person must have served for 25 years to become eligible, but this might be shortened to 16 years for those serving in unhealthy climates abroad. There is one class: Companion. Both men and women are eligible, and recipients of this order are entitled to use the post-nominal letters 'ISO'. Brighton General Cemetery is located in the Melbourne suburb of Caulfield South, Victoria, but takes its name from Brighton, Victoria. History The Cemetery pre-dates the Caulfield Roads Board - the first official recognition of the suburb of Caulfield. Established in 1854 it became, together with St Kilda Cemetery, an alternative resting place for those who had lived south of the Yarra River. There are up 70,000 people interred, including famous Australian artists, politicians and military heroes. The first representative of the Jewish community of the Board of Trustees was Phillip Blashki. He organised the building of the Tahara house, where the deceased were watched until buried. Colonel David Miller (1857 β 1934) was a senior Australian Commonwealth Public Servant, appointed in the year of Federation to head the Department of Home Affairs. Life and career David Miller was born in Glebe, Sydney on 27 March 1857. He joined the NSW Public Service in 1875. His military career started ten years later when he was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the New South Wales Militia. In 1901, Miller was appointed Secretary of the Department of Home Affairs. He was made Administrator of the Federal Capital Territory in 1912, occupying dual positions, and transferring to Canberra. His residency was the first permanent building in Canberra and he was responsible for conducting an international design competition for establishing the national capital. Miller was not a fan of the Walter Burley Griffin design selected for Canberra, believing it to be too expensive to be realised.
