Walsh-Kaiser Company
Walsh-Kaiser Co., Inc. was a shipyard in both Cranston, Rhode Island, Cranston and Providence, Rhode Island. It was built during World War II and financed by the Maritime Commission as part of the country's Emergency Shipbuilding Program. It was originally operated by Rheem Manufacturing Company, Rheem Manufacturing, a company with no previous shipbuilding expertise. When Rheem had difficulty managing the yard, Kaiser Shipyards was retained to manage the operation. History Early history and war years In 1942, the Maritime Commission selected Fields Point for the location of an emergency shipyard. It was planned to be able to build ships on six different ways. The construction of the shipyard was financed as part of the country's Emergency Shipbuilding Program. HMS ''Anguilla'' (K500) was a Colony-class frigate of the United Kingdom in commission from 1943 to 1946 that served during World War II. She originally was ordered by the United States Navy as the ''Tacoma''-class patrol frigate USS ''Hallowell'' (PF-72), later renamed USS ''Machias'' (PF-72), and was transferred prior to completion. Construction and acquisition The ship, originally designated a "patrol gunboat," PG-180, was ordered by the United States Maritime Commission under a United States Navy contract as USS ''Hallowell''. USS Thor
USS ''Thor'' was a cable repair ship that supported Project Caesar, the unclassified name for installation of the SOSUS, Sound Surveillance System (SOSUS). Originally the ''Vanadis'' (AKA-49) which was briefly in commission from 9 July 1945 to 27 March 1946, it was converted in 1955 after nine years in the reserve fleet.
