Council Bluffs, Iowa
Council Bluffs is a city in and the county seat of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, United States. The city is the most populous in Southwest Iowa, and is the third largest and a primary city of the Omaha–Council Bluffs metropolitan area, Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Area. It is located on the east bank of the Missouri River, across from the city of Omaha, Nebraska. Council Bluffs was known, until at least 1853, as Kanesville. It was the historic starting point of the Mormon Trail. Kanesville is also the northernmost anchor town of the Emigrant Trail, other emigrant trails, since there was a steam-powered boat to ferry their wagons, and cattle, across the Missouri River. Charles Edward Swanson
Charles Edward Swanson (January 3, 1879 – August 22, 1970) served two terms as a Republican U.S. Representative from Iowa's 9th congressional district. His congressional career ended in the landslide that accompanied the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt to his first term as president. Swanson was born in a farm near Galesburg, Illinois to Swedish immigrants, he attended the public schools in Galesburg. In 1890 he moved to Iowa with his parents, who settled on a farm in Ringgold County. He resumed his studies in the public school at Clearfield, Iowa. He returned to Galesburg to attend Knox College, where he graduated in 1902. He then served as principal of schools at Altona, Illinois from 1902 to 1904. He attended law school at Northwestern University and graduated in 1907, when he was admitted to the bar. William Henry Mills Pusey (July 29, 1826 – November 15, 1900), an American banker, was a one-term Democratic Party (United States), Democratic United States House of Representatives, U.S. Representative from Iowa's 9th congressional district in southwestern Iowa from 1883 to 1885. Born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, Pusey attended the Washington and Jefferson College, Pennsylvania, and was graduated in 1847. Grenville Mellen Dodge (April 12, 1831 – January 3, 1916) was a Union Army officer on the frontier and a pioneering figure in military intelligence during the Civil War, who served as Ulysses S. Grant's intelligence chief in the Western Theater. He served in several notable assignments, including command of the XVI Corps during the Atlanta Campaign.
