Wally Beckwith
John Walter 'Wally' Beckwith (30 May 1893 – 7 December 1983) was a professional runner and Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy and was a boundary umpire in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Athletic career Beckwith was a professional sprinter who competed under the Victorian Athletic League (VAL) from 1909–1934. As both a flat-runner and a hurdler he was most successful during his early years which included a third-place in the 1915 Stawell Gift and a win in the Sprint Handicap (75 yards) at the same meeting. He had won the latter event in 1913 and could have won three in a row had he not submitted an incomplete entry for in 1914. Other wins of note included the 1918 Shepparton Gift and a Wangaratta Gift. He was winning races as late as 1930 when he won the Lancefield Gift. Mentone is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 21 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Kingston local government area. Mentone recorded a population of 13,197 at the . Richmond Football Club
The Richmond Football Club, nicknamed the Tigers, is an Australian rules football team playing in the Australian Football League (AFL). Between its inception in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond in 1885 and 1907, the club competed in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), winning two premierships. Richmond joined the Victorian Football League (now known as the AFL) in 1908 and has since won 13 premierships, most recently in 2020. Richmond's headquarters and training facilities are located at its original home ground, the Punt Road Oval, which sits adjacent to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the club's playing home since 1965. Richmond traditionally wears a black guernsey with a yellow sash. The club song, " We're From Tigerland", is well known for its "yellow and black" refrain. 1929 VFL Grand Final
The 1929 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Collingwood Football Club and Richmond Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 28 September 1929. It was the 31st annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1929 VFL season. The match, attended by 63,236 spectators, was won by Collingwood by a margin of 29 points, marking that club's eighth premiership victory and third in succession. North Melbourne Football Club
The North Melbourne Football Club, nicknamed the Kangaroos, is a professional Australian rules football club. The men's team competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), and the women's team in the AFL Women's (AFLW). The Kangaroos also field a reserves men's team in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Founded in the suburb of North Melbourne in 1869 and based at the Arden Street Oval, it is the 4th oldest club in the competition and one of the oldest surviving clubs in the world. Its original home at Arden Street continues to serve as its headquarters, training facilities and home ground for its women's side. John Beckwith (footballer)
John Beckwith (born 16 September 1932) is a former Australian rules football player and coach, for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Beckwith's father, Wally Beckwith, was a VFL player for Fitzroy and was also a VFL umpire. Beckwith won the 1949 Federal Football League's Under 18 best and fairest award with Black Rock. Beckwith made his debut in round one against Essendon at Windy Hill. Essendon had been premiers the previous year and as such it was the unfurling of the 1950 premiership flag. The players had to line up, and General Sir Dallas Brooks, the Governor of Victoria, came past. Beckwith was only 19 years of age, and meeting the governor as well as playing his first game of VFL football was a nerve-wracking experience, although he did end up kicking a goal. Beckwith was a member of Melbourne premiership sides in 1955–1957 and 1959–1960. He won a club best and fairest award in 1957, and captained the Demons from 1957 to 1959. ... Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. The decision of the club to change its nickname to the Lions in 1957 coincided with what history now records as the beginning of decades of poor on-field performance and financial losses that eventually resulted in the club being placed into administration, ultimately leaving the AFL at the end of the 1996 season. 1918 VFL Season
The 1918 VFL season was the 22nd season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. Played during the final year of World War I, eight of the league's nine senior clubs competed, an increase of two from the previous year with only absent. The season ran from 11 May until 7 September, and comprised a 14-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the South Melbourne Football Club for the second time, after it defeated by five points in the 1918 VFL Grand Final.
