Wally Barclay
Walter Sinclair Barclay (2 May 1902 – 1 December 1959) was a New Zealand cricketer who played first-class cricket for Wellington from 1921 to 1926. Life and career Wally Barclay's family moved from Otago to Wellington when he was a boy. His father had a senior position with the New Zealand Railways Department. Barclay captained the cricket team at Wellington College in 1919. In 1920, playing his first match of senior club cricket in Wellington for Old Boys, he scored 108. He was the first player to score a century on debut in Wellington senior cricket. He played for Wellington for some seasons with one outstanding performance, when he took 6 for 65 and 4 for 49 in the victory over Otago in the Plunket Shield in 1921–22. He was selected to play for North Island against South Island at the end of the season, and again contributed substantially to victory, this time by scoring 67 not out in the first innings. Waihola
The township of Waihola lies between Dunedin and Milton, New Zealand in Otago, in New Zealand's South Island. It lies close to the southeast shore of the shallow tidal lake which shares its name. The town is located on State Highway 1, and the South Island Main Trunk rail line runs through it, though trains no longer stop. The township is within the boundaries of Clutha District. Etymology The name ''Waihola'' is accepted to be analogous with the word ''wai-hora'', meaning "spreading waters". The place name for the location of Waihola is assigned as an official place name by the New Zealand Geographic Board. The place name also creates some interest as the Māori alphabet doesn't normally contain the letter ' L'. This is most likely an example of an earlier Southern Māori dialect. The North Island cricket team is a representative cricket team based in New Zealand. They have played intermittently in first-class and List A cricket since 1894. They have most frequently played against the South Island cricket team, but have also played first-class matches against touring national sides. In the 1981–82, 1993–94 and 1994–95 seasons, they faced South Island in one-day matches billed as the "Plunket Shield", while similar contests in 2003–04 and 2004–05 were named the "State of Origin" matches. Taranaki Cricket Team
Taranaki cricket team represents the Taranaki Region of New Zealand. It competes in the Hawke Cup. Taranaki as a representative team played as early as 1877. First-class matches Between 1883 and 1898 Taranaki played eight matches that are now considered first-class. They won one match, lost six and drew one. 1882–83 * At Auckland Domain in March 1883, Auckland 241 defeated Taranaki 63 and 55 by an innings and 123 runs. Hawke Cup
The Hawke Cup is a non-first-class cricket competition for New Zealand's district associations. Apart from 1910–11, 1912–13 and 2000–01 the competition has always been on a challenge basis. To win the Hawke Cup, the challengers must beat the holders, either outright or on the first innings in a drawn match, on the holders' home ground. Teams from New Zealand's four main centres, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, have not usually competed for the Hawke Cup, although they did participate in the latter half of the 1990s. They were excluded again from the 2000–01 season. From 2000 to 2010 the team from Hamilton, New Zealand's fourth-largest urban area, was the most successful. The Central Stags, formerly known as Central Districts, are a first-class cricket team based in central New Zealand. They are the men's representative side of the Central Districts Cricket Association. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) is a now-defunct government science agency in New Zealand, founded in 1926 and broken into Crown Research Institutes in 1992. Foundation DSIR was founded in 1926 by Ernest Marsden after calls from Ernest Rutherford for government to support education and research and on the back of the Imperial Economic Conference in London in October and November 1923, when various colonies discussed setting up such departments. The Department of Survey and Land Information (DOSLI) is a former department of the New Zealand Government. It was formed in April 1987 as a restructuring of the Department of Lands and Survey. The Department of Lands and Survey was established in 1876 with a wide range of responsibilities, including survey, health and tourist resorts, immigration, Crown lands and roads. Forests and agriculture were added in 1886. The Māori All Blacks, previously called the New Zealand Maori, New Zealand Maoris and New Zealand Natives, are a rugby union team from New Zealand. They are a representative team of the New Zealand Rugby Union, and a prerequisite for playing is that the player has Māori whakapapa (genealogy). In the past this rule was not strictly applied; non–Māori players who looked Māori were often selected in the team. These included a few Pacific island players and a couple of African descent.
