Shawangunk, New York
Shawangunk is a town in southwestern Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 13,563 at the 2020 census. The town takes its name from its largest stream, the Shawangunk Kill. The name Shawangunk is from the language of the Lenape people. Kill is an abbreviation of the Dutch word for creek, ''Killitje.'' It is pronounced Shuh-Whan-Gung History Shawangunk was first settled by Europeans during the 1680s. The region was first designated a precinct about 1710, and became the township of Shawangunk in 1788. The town's name comes from the Dutch transliteration of the Munsee Lenape name or phrase. The approximate Lenape pronunciation was "Sha-WAN-gunk," probably meaning "in the smoky air." The name first appears in the 1682 Indian deed to Gertrude Bruyn. Montgomery (town), New York
Montgomery is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 23,322 at the 2020 census. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, a Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 at the Battle of Quebec. The northern town line is contiguous with the Ulster County border. Montgomery is immediately west of the town of Newburgh. Within its borders are three villages, one eponymous, as well as Walden and most of Maybrook. Newburgh () is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. It forms part of the Poughkeepsie—Newburgh—Middletown metropolitan area, which is a part of the New York megacity, and is a suburban satellite of the urbanized city of Newburgh. The city of Newburgh was a part of the town prior to 1865. New York Stewart International Airport is partially located within the township, and much of the land into which it could have been expanded has been turned into Stewart State Forest. Wallkill Senior High School
Wallkill Senior High School, located in Wallkill, New York, educates students in grades 9 through 12 in the Wallkill Central School District. It is in a residential neighborhood, on Robinson Drive in the northern end of the hamlet, a few blocks west of NY 208. The Shawangunk Ridge can be viewed from the rear. In the 2005–06 school year, New York's Education Department classified Wallkill as a "School in Need of Improvement" under the federal No Child Left Behind Act for failing to meet participation quotas on state standardized tests in math. The school's football team almost won the state championship in 2004. It was leading Binghamton-area Maine-Endwell 36-32 with 19 seconds left in the championship game at Syracuse University's Carrier Dome when an opposing player scored on an 80-yard touchdown run.
