The Wallis WA-120 is an experimental United Kingdom, British autogyro developed by Ken Wallis. Design and development Following on from his family of single-seat Wallis WA-116, autogyros former Royal Air Force aviator Wing Commander Ken Wallis developed a high-performance long-range variant with an enclosed cockpit. The WA-120, Aircraft registration, registered ''G-AYVO'', was first flown on 13 June 1971. The autogyro is powered by a Continental O-240, Rolls-Royce Continental O-240-A piston engine driving a four-bladed pusher propeller. Ken Wallis
Wing Commander Kenneth Horatio Wallis (26 April 1916 – 1 September 2013) was a British aviator, engineer, and inventor. During the Second World War, Wallis served in the Royal Air Force and flew 28 bomber missions over Germany; after the war, he moved on to research and development, before retiring in 1964. He later became one of the leading exponents of autogyros and earned 34 world records, still holding eight of them at the time of his death in 2013. Early life Born on 26 April 1916 at Ely, he was educated at The Kings' School Ely Cambridgeshire. Wallis developed a practical interest in mechanics, building a motorcycle at the age of 11. In 1936, he was inspired by a demonstration by Henri Mignet of his Mignet HM.14 ''Pou-du-Ciel'' ("Flying Flea"). An aircraft registration is a code unique to a single aircraft, required by Chicago Convention, international convention to be marked on the exterior of every civil aircraft. The Continental O-240 engine is a four-cylinder, horizontally opposed, air-cooled aircraft engine that was developed in the late 1960s for use in light aircraft by Continental Motors, Inc. The first O-240 was certified on 7 July 1971. Design and development The O-240 was a new engine design derived from the six-cylinder Continental O-360 and introduced in 1971. It is generally similar in overall dimensions to the Continental O-200, but with a higher 8.5:1 compression ratio, designed to run on 100/130 avgas. The O-240 delivers 30% more power than the O-200 while it weighs only 12% more.
