Hillfort
A hillfort is a type of earthwork used as a fortified refuge or defended settlement, located to exploit a rise in elevation for defensive advantage. They are typically European and of the Bronze Age or Iron Age. Some were used in the post-Roman period. The fortification usually follows the contours of a hill and consists of one or more lines of earthworks, with stockades or defensive walls, and external ditches. Hillforts developed in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age, roughly the start of the first millennium BC, and were used in many Celtic areas of central and western Europe until the Roman conquest. Nomenclature The spellings "hill fort", "hill-fort" and "hillfort" are all used in the archaeological literature. The ''Monument Type Thesaurus'' published by the Forum on Information Standards in Heritage lists ''hillfort'' as the preferred term. Ringwork
A ringwork is a form of fortified defensive structure, usually circular or oval in shape. Ringworks are essentially motte-and-bailey castles without the motte. Defences were usually earthworks in the form of a ditch and bank surrounding the site. Ringworks originated in Germany in the 10th century as an early form of medieval castle and at first were little more than a fortified manor house. They appeared in England just prior to the Norman conquest and large numbers were built during the late 11th and early 12th centuries. More elaborate versions (such as Stansted Mountfitchet Castle) comprise a ringwork and bailey, the ringwork replacing the more usual motte and the bailey acting as a military stronghold. A survey published in 1969 identified 198 ringwork castles in England and Wales, with a further 50 sites that were considered to possibly be ringworks. D. J. Wallburg, North Carolina
Wallburg is a town in Davidson County, North Carolina, United States. It was incorporated in 2004. As of the 2020 census it had a population of 3,051. Geography Wallburg is located in northeastern Davidson County and is bordered to the north by Forsyth County. The town is largely along North Carolina Highway 109, about southeast of Winston-Salem and the same distance northwest of High Point, between the intersections with Gumtree Road and Shady Grove Church Road. Other nearby municipalities include Kernersville to the northeast, Thomasville to the south, and Midway to the southwest. Wallburg is located in the Wallburg Elementary, Oak Grove Middle School, and Ledford Senior High school districts. Wallburg Realschule is a modern secondary school located in Eltmann, Germany, which is named after the local Wallburg castle ruins. Chrobry Fortified Village In Szprotawa
The Chrobry fortified village (Polish: ''Gród Chrobry'', German: ''Wallburg Chrobry'') is an archaeological earthwork and a historical monument near Szprotawa, in the Polish southwestern province of Lower Silesia. It is one of the largest of its kind in Poland and was named after the country's first crowned ruler, Bolesław I the Brave (in Polish known as ''Chrobry''). Background The site lies in the old Bóbr river valley, in the Park Słowiański nature reserve, and comprises a polygonal plateau of in size, which is raised 6 metres above its surroundings. The surface of the polygon is flat throughout, and has regular, steep inclined edges. The site lies between a bog and a marsh, which are now both partly dried out. Otto Wallburg
Otto Wallburg (21 February 1889 – 29 October 1944) was a German actor and Kabarett performer. He was a prolific film actor during the late silent and early sound era. Wallburg was born Otto Maximilian Wasserzug in Berlin, the son of a Jewish banker. He drifted into stage acting, but served in the German Army during the First World War and was wounded on the Eastern Front after winning an Iron Cross. From 1926 onwards he worked in the large German film industry, including many productions made by UFA. When the Nazis came to power in 1933 he left Germany and moved to Austria where he continued to work in film. He later moved to France and then on to the Netherlands. He was arrested following the 1940 German invasion of the Netherlands. He was held for a while at Westerbork transit camp, and later moved to Auschwitz where he was killed.
