Wallace Group
The Wallace Group is a grouping of seven universities in the UK that have a shared interest in promoting sports and health workshops in developing countries. The members are the Cardiff Metropolitan University, Durham University, the University of Edinburgh, Loughborough University, Northumbria University, University of St Andrews and the University of Stirling; the University of Bath supports the work of the group with a parallel sports facility construction programme. The sports which are primarily promoted are football, volleyball, basketball and netball with education workshops focused on HIV & AIDS. The group was formed in 2004, originally with six universities, in partnership with UK Sport and established itself in 2006. It is named after David Wallace who is affiliated to two member universities. Netball
Netball is a ball sport played on a court by two teams of seven players. It is among a rare number of sports which have been created exclusively for female competitors. The sport is played on indoor and outdoor netball courts and is specifically played in schools. Netball is most popularly played in Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth nations. A common misunderstanding of the sport's origins has resulted in the mistaken belief that netball was created to prevent women from playing basketball. David Wallace (physicist)
Sir David James Wallace, CBE, FRS, FRSE, FREng (born 7 October 1945) is a British physicist and academic. He was the Vice-Chancellor of Loughborough University from 1994 to 2005, and the Master of Churchill College, Cambridge from 2006 to 2014. Early life and education Wallace was born on 7 October 1945. He was educated at Hawick High School in Hawick, Borders, Scotland and went to the University of Edinburgh where he earned a degree in Mathematical Physics and a PhD in Elementary particle theory, under the supervision of Peter Higgs. Career After postdoctoral research work as a Harkness Fellow at Princeton University, Wallace became a physics lecturer at the University of Southampton in 1972. UK Sport is the government agency responsible for investing in Olympic and Paralympic sport in the United Kingdom. It is an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport. It was created following a "rock bottom" showing at the 1996 Summer Olympics where Team GB won just one solitary gold medal. Team GB and Paralympics GB went on to place third in the medal table at London 2012 and second in the table at Rio 2016.
