The Corporation of the Town of Walkerville (or Town of Walkerville) is a small local government area in the central suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. The residents of the Town of Walkerville are represented by a mayor and eight councillors. The area is home to the highest concentration of top earners in South Australia, and was named "South Australia's richest postcode" in 2016. History The District Council of Walkerville was first proclaimed on 5 July 1855, severing the area from the District Council of Yatala after a petition by local residents proclaimed a desire to break away from the larger District Council of Yatala (proclaimed in 1853). Initially, only the suburbs of Walkerville and Gilberton seceded from Yatala but within a few months, Medindie and North Walkerville (now part of Walkerville proper, east of Fuller Street) were annexed by Walkerville. Walkerville is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It lies just north east of the city centre, about from the Adelaide GPO. Walkerville is one of South Australia's most affluent suburbs and in 2012 it was South Australia's second "top earning suburb." History Walkerville was named after Captain John Walker R. N. (no relation to Captain Johnnie Walker), who took up land in the district in 1838, two years after the first colonists arrived in South Australia. The area was attractive to early settlers and within a few years, the settlement had become a village. During the 1840s, Walker fell victim to over-speculation in land value and a statewide financial depression. He was imprisoned briefly for debt and in 1849 he left the colony to take up a government position in Hobart. His connection with the state, although brief, is remembered in the naming of the suburb. Walkerville, Ontario, is a former town in Canada, that is today a heritage precinct of Windsor, Ontario. The town was founded by Hiram Walker in 1890, owner and producer of Canadian Club Whisky. Walker planned it as a 'model town’, (originally called 'Walker's Town'), that would be the envy of both the region and the continent. He established a distillery on the Detroit River and grew his business by growing grain, milling flour, and raising cattle and hogs. Later, the town supported other major industries, notably automotive manufacturing. It was annexed to Windsor, July 1, 1935. Architecture Walker established homes for his workers, a church dedicated to his late wife, and a school. Colburn is a town, civil parish and electoral ward in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England, west of Catterick. It had a population of 4,860 at the 2011 census, rising from 3,606 in 2001. History The town takes its name from the first settlers along the stream Colburn Beck. It means "cold stream," "coal stream" or "cool, black stream" and is a mixture of Old English and Old Norse (Col, Kol and Burna). A "burn" refers to a valley that has been eroded by flowing water. Walker is a residential suburb and electoral ward in the south-east of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. History The place-name 'Walker' is first attested in 1242, where it appears as ''Waucre''. This means 'wall-carr', that is to say, 'the marsh by the Roman wall', a reference to Hadrian's Wall. Today, a small fragment of the wall can be found in neighbouring Byker to the west, and Segedunum, a major site at the end of the Wall can be found in Wallsend to the east. Large-scale coal-mining began in the area in the early 1700s, with up to ten collieries in operation in the Walker area. A wagon-way was constructed during this period to facilitate transportation of coal to the riverside staithes. Walkerville is a village in Oceana County of the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 247 at the 2010 census. The village is located within Leavitt Township. History Walkerville was founded by the Walker family in the 19th century. At one point, the village had a very busy railway passing through it. Walkerville suffered two major fires, which damaged the infrastructure greatly each time. Walkerville has not yet recovered to its post fire glory days. It currently is a community that helps in the cultivation of produce for which West Michigan is known, such as cherries, apples and asparagus.
