''Sometimes a Great Notion'' is the second novel by American author Ken Kesey, published in 1964. While '' One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'' (1962) is more famous, many critics consider ''Sometimes a Great Notion'' Kesey's magnum opus. The story involves an Oregon family of gyppo loggers who cut trees for a local mill in opposition to unionized workers who are on strike. ''Wakonda's Dream'' is an English-language opera composed by American Anthony Davis with a libretto by Yusef Komunyakaa. It premiered March 7, 2007 at Omaha, Nebraska's Orpheum. It is about a contemporary Ponca family and the spiritual journey of their son, who is deeply connected to a noted chief, Standing Bear, and an 1879 trial he won in a United States court. Waconda, Oregon
Waconda is a historic unincorporated community in Marion County, Oregon, United States, near the crossroads of River Road Rd NE and Waconda Road NE on the French Prairie. Waconda was once a station on the Oregon Electric Railway and it formerly had a post office by the same name. The station was named when the railroad was built through the area in 1907, and the post office was established in 1912. There was previously a community called Waconda about a mile south of Gervais established in 1870 on the former line of the Oregon & California Railroad (now owned by Union Pacific). The name may come from the Great Plains Native American word " Wakonda" (something consecrated). Waconda was one of a series of OE stations with Native American names; one station to the south was named for Chinookan leader Comcomly and the next one to the north was named for Kalapuyan "Chief" Quinaby. Waconda Spring
Waconda Spring, or Great Spirit Spring, was a natural artesian spring located in Mitchell County, near the communities of Glen Elder and Cawker City in the U.S. state of Kansas. It was a sacred site for Native American tribes of the Great Plains and, for a time, became the site of a health spa for American settlers. With the completion of the Glen Elder Dam in 1968, the mineral spring was sealed then disappeared beneath the waters of Waconda Reservoir. Description Waconda Spring was situated on the bank of the Solomon River, below the North and South Forks of the river. Waconda Lake
Waconda Lake, also known as Glen Elder Reservoir, is a reservoir in Mitchell County and Osborne County, Kansas, United States. Built and managed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for flood control and irrigation, it is also used for recreation. Glen Elder State Park is located on its north shore. History Prior to the building of Glen Elder Dam, the present-day site of Waconda Lake was the location of Waconda Spring, a natural flowing artesian well, from which the lake was named. To capitalize on it, in 1904 the Cawker City Mineral Company opened a resort on the site of the spring. In 1907, G.F. Abraham of Mankato, Kansas converted the resort into a health spa. Wakonda State Park is a public recreation area covering near La Grange, Missouri, La Grange in Lewis County, Missouri, Lewis County, Missouri. The state park features water recreation on six small lakes. History The park occupies one of the few remaining sand prairie areas found along the central and northern Mississippi River. During the Last glacial period, last Ice Age, the glacial movement left large deposits of high-quality gravel and sand. Beginning in 1924, the Missouri Highway Commission contracted with private companies to remove gravel deposits for use in road surfacing. The depth of the gravel required open-pit mining techniques which eventually led to the creation of the six lakes that dot the park's landscape.
