The Wakaman(Tindale) otherwise spelt Wagaman are an Indigenous Australian people of the state of Queensland. According to some authorities, they may be interchangeable with the group identified by ethnographers as the Ewamin. Country The Wakaman are a savannah dwelling people of the headwaters of the Lynd River, whose northern extension ran to Mungana and the neighbourhood of Chillagoe. Ewamin
The Ewamin or ''Agwamin'' are an indigenous Australian people of the state of Queensland. Language Their language, now extinct, was formerly thought to be interchangeable with Wamin. Peter Sutton's fieldwork in the early 1970s enabled him to draw up word-lists from two languages, respectively Wamin and Agwamin which revealed that they were separate dialects. There was only one speaker of the language alive in 1981. Country In Norman Tindale's estimation the Ewamin had approximately of tribal land, centering on the headwaters of the Einasleigh and Copperfield rivers. Their northern limits reached as far as Georgetown, Mount Surprise, and Lancewood. Lynd River
The Lynd River is a river located on the Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, Australia. Course and features The headwaters of the river rise in the Forty Mile Scrub National Park in the Great Dividing Range and flows in a north westerly direction. It flows down the range and onto the plains of the Gulf Country past cattle stations such Torwood, The Lake outstation and Bulimba. Continuing north it discharges into the Mitchell River near Staaten River National Park. From source to mouth, the Lynd River is joined by twenty tributaries including the Tate River, descending over its course. In its upper reaches, the river is crossed by the Kennedy Highway. Mungana
Mungana is part of the rural locality of Chillagoe, north Queensland, Australia and a former mining township in its own right. It is within the local government area of Shire of Mareeba (between 2008 and 2013, it was within the Tablelands Region). History Mungana Post Office opened by 1907 (a receiving office had been open in 1897 and 1898), closed in 1945, reopened in 1951 and closed again in 1960. Chillagoe, Queensland
Chillagoe is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Mareeba, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Chillagoe had a population of 251 people. It was once a thriving mining town for a range of minerals, but is now reduced to a small zinc mine and some marble quarries. Just out of town is the Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park containing limestone caves. There are between 600 and 1,000 caves in the Chillagoe-Mungana area. The caves, the spectacular karst landscape and the mining and smelting history are the main tourist attractions to the region. It has been stated by leading geologist Professor Ian Plimer that the Chillagoe region has the most diverse geology in the world. History Chillagoe was named by William Atherton in 1888. Almaden is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Mareeba, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Almaden had a population of 71 people. Mount Surprise is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Etheridge, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Mount Surprise had a population of 169 people. Geography The town is located in the Gulf Savannah in Far North Queensland on the Gulf Developmental Road, north west of the state capital, Brisbane and west of the regional centre of Cairns. History The town was founded by Ezra Firth, from the English county of Yorkshire, who along with his family settled in the area in 1864. The property struggled at first; relations with the indigenous inhabitants of the country were hostile and the country was not suited for wool growing. The discovery of gold in the 1880s and the subsequent gold rush allowed Firth to sell his sheep to the miners, convert his holding to cattle and become wealthy selling goods to the miners.
