Waiau is a rural locality in the Western Bay of Plenty District of New Zealand. It is on the northern side of Tauranga Harbour, and is east and north from Waihi Beach and east of Athenree. Waiau is a small town in north Canterbury, in the South Island of New Zealand. It lies east of Hanmer Springs on the northern bank of the Waiau Uwha River, some from the river's mouth. There is a small supermarket, a DIY store and a petrol station. History Waiau is the largest town on State Highway 70, also known as the Inland Kaikoura Route. From 1919 until 1978, Waiau was the terminus of the Waiau Branch, a branch line railway that ran to the town from a junction with the Main North Line in Waipara. There were proposals to extend this line beyond Waiau as part of the Main North Line and some of formation was made for a route to Kaikoura, but construction ground to a halt and a coastal route via Parnassus and Hundalee was chosen for the Main North Line instead. Franz Josef / Waiau is a small town in the West Coast region of the South Island of New Zealand. Whataroa is to the north-east, and the township of Fox Glacier is to the south-west. The Waiho River runs from the Franz Josef Glacier to the south, through the town, and into the Tasman Sea to the north-west. Name Local Māori called the area , which means swirling waters. In the 1860s Sir Julius von Haast named the Franz Josef Glacier in honour of the Emperor of Austria Franz Josef I of Austria. The town Franz Josef was then named after the glacier. The Franz Josef Glacier (; officially Franz Josef Glacier / ) is a temperate maritime glacier in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Together with the Fox Glacier to the south, and a third glacier, it descends from the Southern Alps to less than above sea level. The Waiau River is the largest river in the Southland region of New Zealand. 'Waiau' translates to 'River of Swirling Currents'. It is the outflow of Lake Te Anau, flowing from it into Lake Manapouri to the south, and from there flows south for before reaching the Foveaux Strait south of Tuatapere. It also takes water from Lake Monowai.
