Grant County is a county located in the U.S. state of Washington. As of the 2020 census, the population was 99,123. The county seat is Ephrata, and the largest city is Moses Lake. The county was formed out of Douglas County in February 1909 and is named for U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant. Grant County comprises the Moses Lake, WA Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also part of the Moses Lake-Othello, WA Combined Statistical Area. History Native American cultures in the area included the Interior Salish, Wenatchi, and Okanagan. The first white settlers began to arrive in the mid-to-late-19th century, primarily with the goal of raising livestock. One government official described the area in 1879 as, "…a desolation where even the most hopeful can find nothing in its future prospects to cheer." Mattawa is an incorporated city in Grant County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,335 at the 2020 census. History The town of Mattawa was originally platted in 1909 by E. and Eva Campbell, but was not incorporated at that time. With the construction of nearby Priest Rapids Dam and Wanapum Dam, the town boomed with construction workers. Mattawa was officially incorporated on June 3, 1958. The Port of Mattawa was also established in 1958. Mattawa is also home to the first straw bale library in the United States. On December 3, 2009, the City of Mattawa became a non-charter code city. Beverly, Washington
Beverly, Washington, United States, is a small unincorporated community along the banks of the Columbia River in central Washington state. The community, which consists of a few hundred residents, is a few miles downriver from Wanapum Dam and is nestled at the base of Sentinel Gap, a water gap in the Saddle Mountains that predates the Columbia River. History Beverly was named around 1905 by H.R. Williams, after Beverly, Massachusetts. Beverly played host to hundreds of railroad workers from 1905-1920s when the Milwaukee Railroad was being built. The Milwaukee constructed a million-dollar bridge across the Columbia just north of Beverly, which was completed in 1909. Supplies to build the bridge were shipped via steamboat from points upstream, and were hauled in on other rail lines. The bridge took nearly two years to complete. Its boundaries include the unincorporated villages of Beverly, Washington and Schwana, after which it was named. As of the 2020 census, the CDP had a population of 215. Desert Aire is a census-designated place (CDP) in Grant County, Washington, United States. Desert Aire's elevation is . The population was 1,626 at the 2010 census, up from 1,124 at the 2000 census. Geography Desert Aire is located near the southwest corner of Grant County at (46.685121, -119.924811), on the east bank of the Columbia River where it is part of Priest Rapids Lake. Washington State Route 243 forms the eastern edge of the CDP; the highway leads north to Mattawa and to Interstate 90 across the Columbia River from Vantage. To the southeast SR 243 leads to SR 24 at the Vernita Bridge over the Columbia.
