Bainbridge Wadleigh
Bainbridge Wadleigh (January 4, 1831January 24, 1891) was a United States senator from New Hampshire. Born in Bradford, he attended the common schools and Kimball Union Academy (Meriden, New Hampshire). He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1850 and commenced practice in Milford. Wadleigh served six terms as town moderator and was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 1855-1856, 1859-1860, and from 1869 to 1872. United States Senate Wadleigh was nominated to the U.S. Senate on the evening of June 13, 1872 by the Republican party caucus of the New Hampshire legislature, on its fifth ballot. He received the nomination instead of the incumbent Senator James W. Patterson, who had led on the first three caucus ballots. Wadleigh had not sought the office, and received 3 votes on the first ballot. In the succeeding second through fourth ballots, he received 8, 18, and 39 votes respectively. Julian Wadleigh (1904–1994) was an American economist and a Department of State official in the 1930s and 1940s. He was a key witness in the Alger Hiss trials. Background Henry Julian Wadleigh was born in 1904. He went to an English "public" school, and then to the University of Oxford where he read classics. He returned to the United States where he received fellowships at the University of Chicago and the Brookings Institution. Career In the early 1930s he started as an economist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Lydia Fowler Wadleigh
Lydia Fowler Wadleigh (February 8, 1817 – October 27, 1888) was an American educator, principal of the first high school for girls in New York City, and "lady superintendent" of the precursor to Hunter College. Early life and education Lydia Fowler Wadleigh was born in Sutton, New Hampshire, daughter of Benjamin and Polly Marsden Wadleigh. Her father was a county judge. Her cousin was US Senator Bainbridge Wadleigh. She attended New Hampton Literary and Scientific Institution, graduating in 1841. Career Miss Wadleigh remained in New Hampton to teach Latin and Greek at her alma mater, and stayed for four years. She also taught at schools elsewhere in New Hampshire, and further from home in Freehold, New Jersey. In 1855, she was hired as principal at New York City's first public high school for girls, located on 12th Street in Greenwich Village, in part because she was well-qualified to teach Latin.
