Wadjigu
The Wadjiga people, also known as Wadja, Maudalgo, Wadjainggo, and other variants, were an Aboriginal Australian people of inland eastern Queensland. Country Wadja tribal lands covered some along the streams flowing along the eastern side of the Expedition Range. Their southern boundaries reached as far as Bigge Range. To the east they ran to the vicinity of the Dawson River. They were the Indigenous inhabitants of Woorabinda. History According to traditional lore, the Wadjiga arose from a confluence of two distinct tribes, namely the Wainjigo and the Wadja. Long cohabitation over the same tribal grounds led to the effective amalgamation of their separate identities and customs. Bidjara Language
Bidjara, also spelt Bidyara or Pitjara, is an Australian Aboriginal language. In 1980, it was spoken by twenty elders in Queensland between the towns of Tambo and Augathella, or the Warrego and Langlo Rivers. There are many dialects of the language, including Gayiri and Gunggari. Some of them are being revitalised and is being taught in local schools in the region. Dialects The Bidjara language included numerous dialects, of which Bidjara proper was the last to go extinct. One of these was Gunya (Kunja), spoken over 31,200 km2 (12,188 sq mi), from the Warrego River near Cunnamulla north to Augathella and Burenda Station; west to between Cooladdi and Cheepie; east to Morven and Angellala Creek; at Charle-ville. Fred McKellar was the last known speaker. Yagalingu is poorly attested but may have been a dialect of Bidjara. Expedition Range
Expedition Range is a mountain range within the Central Highlands sandstone region of Queensland, Australia. Robinson Creek cuts a 100 metres deep gorge through sandstone clifflines. Many spectacular side gorges add to the appeal of the area, which is included in the Expedition National Park. Geography The Comet River rises on the western slopes of the range and flows in a northerly direction towards Rolleston. The Dawson Highway crosses northern parts of the Expedition Range. Flora and fauna The main trees and plants are eucalyptus open forests and woodlands. Cabbage Tree Palms are common along the creeks, while the lowlands contain pockets of brigalow and softwood scrubs. The fauna of the area is similar to that of other Central Highland sandstone areas. Woorabinda, Queensland
Woorabinda is a rural town and locality in the Aboriginal Shire of Woorabinda, Queensland, Australia. In the , Woorabinda had a population of 962 people. It is an Aboriginal community. Geography Woorabinda is in Central Queensland, inland about two hours' drive west of Rockhampton. The seasonal Mimosa Creek is nearby and is a source of local water. During rainy season, the town can be isolated due to road flooding. Access is via the Fitzroy Developmental Road, which is sealed north towards Duaringa and where it meets the Capricorn Highway to Rockhampton. To the south, it is gravel road to Bauhinia, where it meets the Dawson Highway and access to Gladstone. East is the sealed Baralaba-Woorabinda Road, seasonally cut off by flooding. West has a number of cattle properties until the base of the Blackdown Tablelands, serviced by gravel roads. Aboriginal Australians are the various Indigenous peoples of the Australian mainland and many of its islands, such as Tasmania, Fraser Island, Hinchinbrook Island, the Tiwi Islands, and Groote Eylandt, but excluding the Torres Strait Islands. Dawson River (Queensland)
The Dawson River is a river located in Central Queensland, Australia. Course and features The Dawson River rises in the Carnarvon Range, draining through the Carnarvon National Park, northwest of the settlement of Upper Dawson. The flows generally south by east, crossed by the Carnarvon Highway and then flows generally east through the settlement of where the river is crossed by the Leichhardt Highway. The river then flows in a northerly direction through the settlement of where the river is again crossed by the Leichhardt Highway. The river flows north through the settlement of and towards , crossed by the Capricorn Highway. Norman Tindale
Norman Barnett Tindale AO (12 October 1900 – 19 November 1993) was an Australian anthropologist, archaeologist, entomologist and ethnologist. Life Tindale was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1900. His family moved to Tokyo and lived there from 1907 to 1915, where his father worked as an accountant at the Salvation Army mission in Japan. Norman attended the American School in Japan, where his closest friend was Gordon Bowles, a Quaker who, like him, later became an anthropologist. The family returned to Perth in August 1917, and soon after moved to Adelaide where Tindale took up a position as a library cadet at the Adelaide Public Library, together with another cadet, the future physicist, Mark Oliphant. In 1919 he began work as an entomologist at the South Australian Museum.
