Wadi Al-Qarn – Burqush Important Bird Area
The Wadi al-Qarn – Burqush Important Bird Area is a 4,500 ha site in the Qatana District of south-western Syria. It lies at an altitude of 1,175 – 1,500 m next to the village of Burqush in the Anti-Lebanon Mountains, near Mount Hermon and close to the border with Lebanon. The site includes the steep slope on the northern side of the wadi, the upper parts of which are vertical cliffs overlooking rocky slopes vegetated with scrub, grass and stunted trees. A small reservoir attracts visitors in summer. It has been identified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA). Birds Species which triggered the IBA designation include griffon vultures which occur in small numbers, sombre tits, Upcher's warblers, Menetries's warblers, western rock-nuthatches, white-throated robins, Finsch's wheatears, pale rock sparrows and Syrian serins. In winter the reservoir provides habitat for waders and sometimes ducks. References

''Gyps'' is a genus of Old World vultures that was proposed by Marie Jules César Savigny in 1809. Its members are sometimes known as griffon vultures. The genus name is from Ancient Greek ''gups'' meaning "vultur". The genus contains eight extanct species. Two fossil species have been described: * † Maltese vulture ''G. melitensis'' Richard Lydekker, Lydekker, 1890 – Fossil remains were found in Middle Pleistocene, Middle to Late Pleistocene sites all over the central and eastern Me ...

Environment Of Syria
Major environmental issues in Syria include deforestation, overgrazing, soil erosion, desertification Desertification is a type of land degradation in drylands in which biological productivity is lost due to natural processes or induced by human activities whereby fertile areas become increasingly arid. It is the spread of arid areas caused by ..., water pollution from the dumping of raw sewage and wastes from petroleum refining, and inadequate supplies of potable water. Water scarcity, Water shortages, exacerbated by population growth, industrial expansion, and water pollution, are a significant long-term constraint on economic development. The water shortages in Syria turned into five successive years of drought, prolonging the environmental issues that Syria already had. The Assad government (Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party – Syria Region, Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party – Syrian Region) came into power in Syria in 1970.
