Waco (album)
''Waco'' is the fourth studio album by Australian alternative rock band Violent Soho. It was released on I Oh You Records in March 2016. The album came first in the annual Triple J Top 10 albums of the year poll. At the J Awards of 2016, the album was nominated for Australian Album of the Year. Title According to frontman Luke Boerdam, ''WACO'' is like ''Hungry Ghost''’s “older sister: ''Hungry Ghost'' dealt with the spiritual skeleton we’ve become from this spoon-fed reality. ''WACO'' is more about control and illusion: what the skeleton is being fed”. Reception The album fared well with critics and came first in Triple Js annual album of the year poll. All six of the album's singles placed within Triple J's Hottest 100 with Like Soda reaching 15 in 2015 and How To Taste, No Shade, So Sentimental, Blanket and Viceroy reaching 92, 73, 69, 53 and 14 respectively in 2016 making Violent Soho the number one act of the year with five songs charting. Violent Soho
Violent Soho were an Australian alternative rock band that was formed in 2004 in the Brisbane suburb of Mansfield, Queensland originally under the name of "showroom". For the majority of the band's existence, the line-up was composed of Luke Boerdam (lead vocals, guitar), James Tidswell (guitar, backing vocals), Luke Henery (bass, backing vocals) and Michael Richards (drums, backing vocals). Their sound has been compared to that of 1980s and 1990s alternative rock bands such as the Pixies, Mudhoney and Nirvana. Although being largely described as grunge, the band self described themselves as a " stoner pop" band. The band's third studio album, ''Hungry Ghost'', was certified Gold in Australia in September 2014. Their fourth album, ''Waco'', debuted at number 1 on the Australian ARIA Charts in 2016. Triple J (stylised in all lowercase) is a government-funded, national Australian Radio in Australia, radio station intended to appeal to listeners of alternative music, which began broadcasting in January 1975. The station also places a greater emphasis on broadcasting music of Australia, Australian content compared to commercial stations. Triple J is a division of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. ARIA Award For Best Group
The ARIA Music Award for Best Group, is an award presented at the annual ARIA Music Awards, which recognises "the many achievements of Aussie artists across all music genres", since 1987. It is handed out by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), an organisation whose aim is "to advance the interests of the Australian record industry." The 2015 Triple J Hottest 100 was announced Australia Day, 26 January 2016. It is the 23rd countdown of the most popular songs of the year, as chosen by the listeners of Australian radio station Triple J. Voting commenced on 9 December 2015, and closed on 22 January 2016. Voters nominated ten songs that were released between December 2014 and November 2015 and submitted them through the Triple J website. Over 2 million votes were again cast, this year from 172 countries. 54 songs in the 2015 Hottest 100 are by Australian artists, with 26 artists of any nationality making their debut. Despite a betting agency's campaign aimed at getting Justin Bieber featured in the list, similar to 2014's #Tay4Hottest100, Triple J announced no songs have been disqualified from the 2015 list. Triple J Hottest 100
The Triple J Hottest 100 is an annual music listener poll hosted by the publicly-funded, national Australian youth radio station, Triple J. Members of the public are invited to vote for their favourite Australian and alternative music of the year in an online poll conducted two weeks prior to the new year. From 1989 to 2018, the 100 most popular songs were counted down from 12 pm on Australia Day. Since then, the countdown has been held on the fourth weekend of January, due to increasing controversy about Australia Day regarding its marking of the colonisation of Australia and dispossession of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land. Typically on the day after the Hottest 100, Triple J has played the Hottest 200 ("the songs that didn't quite make it") from 10 am. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is the national broadcaster of Australia. It is the 24th countdown of the most popular songs of the year, as chosen by the listeners of Australian radio station Triple J. 2016's countdown broke several Hottest 100 records, including number of votes (over 2.25 million), number of songs by Australian acts both in the whole list (66 out of the 100) and at its top (all of the top four), and longest absence between countdowns (16 years for Paul Kelly). Grunge
Grunge (sometimes referred to as the Seattle sound) is an alternative rock genre and subculture that emerged during the in the American Pacific Northwest state of Washington, particularly in Seattle and nearby towns. Grunge fuses elements of punk rock and heavy metal, but without punk's structure and speed. The genre featured the distorted electric guitar sound used in both genres, although some bands performed with more emphasis on one or the other. Like these genres, grunge typically uses electric guitar, bass guitar, drums and vocals. Grunge also incorporates influences from indie rock bands such as Sonic Youth. Lyrics are typically angst-filled and introspective, often addressing themes such as social alienation, self-doubt, abuse, neglect, betrayal, social and emotional isolation, addiction, psychological trauma and a desire for freedom.
