Wabasha IV
Wabasha IV (1854–1925) was a Mdewakanton Dakota minister, also known as "Hdakinyan" and Napoleon Wabasha. As a young man he served as a scout for the 7th Cavalry Regiment 1873-4. He was elected to the tribal council of the Santee Sioux Reservation in 1878, when the Santees voted to end the old chief system. Mdewakanton
The Mdewakanton or Mdewakantonwan (also spelled ''Mdewákhaŋthuŋwaŋ'' and currently pronounced ''Bdewákhaŋthuŋwaŋ'') are one of the sub-tribes of the Isanti (Santee) Dakota ( Sioux). Their historic home is Mille Lacs Lake (Dakota: ''Mde Wákhaŋ/Bde Wákhaŋ'', Spirit/Mystic Lake) in central Minnesota. Together with the Wahpekute (''Waȟpékhute'' – "Shooters Among the Trees"), they form the so-called ''Upper Council'' of the Dakota or Santee Sioux (''Isáŋyáthi'' – "Knife Makers"). Today their descendants are members of federally recognized tribes in Minnesota, South Dakota and Nebraska of the United States, and First Nations in Manitoba, Canada. Dakota People
The Dakota (pronounced , Dakota language: ''Dakȟóta/Dakhóta'') are a Native American tribe and First Nations band government in North America. They compose two of the three main subcultures of the Sioux people, and are typically divided into the Eastern Dakota and the Western Dakota. The four bands of Eastern Dakota are the Bdewákaŋthuŋwaŋ, Waȟpéthuŋwaŋ, Waȟpékhute, and Sisíthuŋwaŋ and are sometimes referred to as the Santee (''Isáŋyathi'' or ''Isáŋ-athi''; "knife" + "encampment", "dwells at the place of knife flint"), who reside in the eastern Dakotas, central Minnesota and northern Iowa. 7th Cavalry Regiment
The 7th Cavalry Regiment is a United States Army cavalry regiment formed in 1866. Its official nickname is "Garryowen", after the Ireland, Irish air "Garryowen (air), Garryowen" that was adopted as its march tune. The regiment participated in some of the largest battles of the Indian Wars, including its famous defeat at the Battle of Little Bighorn, where its commander Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer was killed. The regiment also committed the Wounded Knee Massacre, where more than 250 men, women and children of the Lakota people, Lakota were killed. The 7th Cavalry became part of the 1st Cavalry Division (United States), 1st Cavalry Division in the 1920s, it went on to fight in the Pacific War, Pacific Theater of World War II and took part in the Admiralty Islands campaign, Admiralty Islands, Battle of Leyte, Leyte and Battle of Luzon, Luzon campaigns. Santee Sioux Reservation
The Santee Sioux Reservation ( dak, Isáŋyathi) of the Santee Sioux (also known as the Eastern Dakota) was established in 1863 in present-day Nebraska. The tribal seat of government is located in Niobrara, Nebraska, with reservation lands in Knox County. History Established by an Act of the U.S. Congress on March 3, 1863, the Niobrara Reservation was officially recognized in an Executive Order dated February 27, 1866, and in treaties dated November 16, 1867 and April 29, 1868. Additional executive orders applying to the reservation were dated August 31, 1869, December 31, 1873, and February 9, 1885.
