Kane, Pennsylvania
Kane is a borough in McKean County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, east by southeast of Erie. It was founded in 1864 by Civil War General Thomas L. Kane of the famous Bucktail Regiment at an elevated site 2210 feet (674 m) above sea level. In the early part of the 20th century, Kane had large glass works, bottle works, lumber mills, and manufactures of brush handles, saws, cutlery, screen doors and windows. The population peaked in the 1920s but has since declined to 3,612 people in 2020. It is the home of the Kane Area School District, and they are known as the Kane Wolves. Free-form, or free-form radio, is a radio station programming format in which the disc jockey is given total control over what music to play, regardless of music genre or commercial interests. WQLE
WQLE (960 AM) was the last official call sign of a now defunct radio station in Kane, Pennsylvania. History McKean County's first full-time radio station WQLE signed on as WADP on June 7, 1954, under the ownership of Northern Allegheny Broadcasting Company. Studios and offices were located inside the Penn-Kane Hotel, at the corner of Fraley and Greeves Streets in Kane. Transmitter facilities were located along Highland Road, outside of Kane. The construction permit to build the station was issued on February 24, 1954, which allowed the station to operate at the assigned frequency of 1590 kHz and at a daytime-only power of 500 watts. WCOP (103.9 MHz) is a commercial FM radio station, licensed to Eldred, Pennsylvania. It is an owned-and-operated station in the Family Life Network, a regional Christian broadcaster. History McKean County's First FM 103.9 began at a time when Kane, Pennsylvania (the station's original city of license) was experiencing a sharp decline in its local economy. WJET-TV (channel 24) is a television station in Erie, Pennsylvania, United States, affiliated with ABC. It is owned by Nexstar Media Group, which provides certain services to Fox affiliate WFXP (channel 66) under a local marketing agreement (LMA) with Mission Broadcasting. Both stations share studios on US 19/Peach Street in Summit Township (with an Erie mailing address), where WJET-TV's transmitter is also located. In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letters—and historically as a call signal—or abbreviated as a call) is a unique identifier for a transmitter station. A call sign can be formally assigned by a government agency, informally adopted by individuals or organizations, or even cryptographically encoded to disguise a station's identity. The use of call signs as unique identifiers dates to the landline railroad telegraph system. Because there was only one telegraph line linking all railroad stations, there needed to be a way to address each one when sending a telegram.
