WWE Universal Champion
The WWE Universal Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE, representing the SmackDown brand division. It is one of two world titles for WWE's main roster, alongside Raw's WWE Championship. The current champion is Roman Reigns, who is in his second reign, which is the longest reign for the title. As Reigns concurrently holds the WWE Championship, he presently defends the titles together across both brands as the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, although both titles retain their individual lineages. Named in honor of WWE's fans, referred to as the WWE Universe, the championship was established on July 25, 2016, to be the top title of the Raw brand. The 2016 Battleground (also known as Battlefield in Germany) was the fourth annual Battleground professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and livestreaming event produced by WWE. It was held for wrestlers from the promotion's Raw and SmackDown brand divisions. The event took place on July 24, 2016, at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Raw is a brand of the American professional wrestling promotion WWE that was established on March 25, 2002. Brands are divisions of WWE's roster where wrestlers are assigned to perform on a weekly basis when a brand extension is in effect.
