WUML
WUML (91.5 MHz) is a non-commercial FM college radio station licensed to Lowell, Massachusetts, United States. The station is owned by the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The transmitter is atop Fox Hall on Pawtucket Street in Lowell. History WUML was started in 1952 by Ed Bonacci, a student attending what was then called the Lowell Technological Institute. After accidentally building a transmitter in his dorm room, a studio was built in Kitson Hall, with a 5-10 watt transmitter located in the basement of the old library. At exactly 7:00 pm on January 15, 1953, the newly christened WLTI began broadcasting on carrier current over electrical power wires specifically to Eames and Smith Hall, as well as Alumni Library on the University's North Campus. During the summer of 1953, permanent station consoles were built and readied for the moving of the studio from Kitson Hall to the basement of Eames Hall, which at that time was being used as a trunk room. Lowell () is a city in Massachusetts, in the United States. Alongside Cambridge, It is one of two traditional seats of Middlesex County. With an estimated population of 115,554 in 2020, it was the fifth most populous city in Massachusetts as of the last census, and the third most populous in the Boston metropolitan statistical area. ''Open Source'' is an American public radio show hosted by Christopher Lydon, former New York Times journalist and original host of '' The Connection''. The show focuses on the arts, literature, and foreign affairs. History In May 2005, Christopher Lydon and his longtime producer Mary McGrath partnered with University of Massachusetts Lowell's radio station WUML, WGBH (FM), and Public Radio International to produce ''Open Source'' as a daily call-in radio program. Christopher Lydon (born 1940 in Boston, Massachusetts) is an American media personality and author. He was the original host of '' The Connection'', produced by WBUR and syndicated to other NPR stations, and created ''Open Source'', a weekly radio program on WBUR. Education Lydon is a graduate of Boston's Roxbury Latin School and Yale University. Journalistic history Lydon is a former journalist with The New York Times, and anchored '' The Ten-O'Clock News'' on WGBH in Boston, Massachusetts. After WGBH cancelled its nightly news program, he moved to WBUR, where in 1994 he became host of ''The Connection''. Cheech & Chong are a comedy duo consisting of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. Hockey East
The Hockey East Association, also known as Hockey East, is a college ice hockey conference which operates entirely in New England. It participates in the NCAA's Division I as a hockey-only conference. Hockey East came into existence in 1984 for men's hockey when most of its current members split from what is today known as ECAC Hockey, after disagreements with the Ivy League members. The women's league, the WHEA, began play in 2002. On October 5, 2011, the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish (an ACC member outside football) announced they would be joining Hockey East as the conference's first non-New England school in 2013 after the CCHA folded. UMass Lowell River Hawks Men's Ice Hockey
The UMass Lowell River Hawks men's ice hockey team is the college ice hockey team that represents the University of Massachusetts Lowell. It competes at the NCAA Division I level in the Hockey East Association. The team competed at the Division II level until 1983. That year the University of Lowell was raised to D1 in hockey only and joined the newly formed Hockey East Association. Thirty years later with a name change to both the school and the team, the University of Massachusetts Lowell claimed their first Hockey East regular season title and HEA Tournament championship in 2013.
