WTKF (107.1 FM broadcasting, FM) is a radio station broadcasting a talk radio format. Licensed to Atlantic, North Carolina, United States, it serves the Morehead City-New Bern-Jacksonville area. WTKF signed on in 1992 as North Carolina's first FM talk-formatted station. It grew from the now-defunct WBTB/1400, which was licensed to Beaufort, North Carolina. As the first radio station in North Carolina to broadcast a talk format on FM radio, it boasted the slogan "First In Talk". In 2002, WTKF began simulcasting its signal on Jacksonville, North Carolina's WJNC AM 1240. On January 22, 2008, WTKF shifted from its 7,000-watt signal at 107.3 FM to a more-powerful 46,000-watt signal at 107.1 FM. The station is currently owned by Atlantic Ridge Telecasters. Morehead City is a port town in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,661 at the 2010 census. Morehead City celebrated the 150th anniversary of its founding on May 5, 2007. It forms part of the Crystal Coast. History By the early 1850s, a group of investors had been formed and incorporated a land development project known as the "Shepard Point Land Company," which purchased of land on the eastern tip of the peninsula bordering the Newport River, known then as "Shepards Point," which is the present location of Morehead City. The Shepard Point Land Company's objective was to take advantage of the natural deep channel of Topsail Inlet, known today as the Beaufort Inlet, which splits Bogue Banks from Shackleford Banks and provides access to Morehead City, Beaufort, North Carolina, the Newport River and the Intracoastal Waterway.
