History The station was originally WBOC on 1500 kHz, and began broadcasting in 1940, relocating to 1230 a year later and sliding down to 960 in 1948 (a move that permitted a power increase from 250 to 1,000 watts). It was initially owned by the Peninsula Broadcasting Company and broadcast from Radio Park on north US Route 13. In the mid 1950s WBOC increased its daytime power to 5,000 watts. WBOC radio and WBOC-TV were acquired by the A.S. Abell Company in 1961, and the licensee changed to WBOC, Inc. In 1980, the WBOC cluster was split up, and MarDel Communications bought the station, which changed its callsign to WSBY. AM Expanded Band
The extended mediumwave broadcast band, commonly known as the AM expanded band, refers to the broadcast station frequency assignments immediately above the earlier upper limits of 1600 kHz in International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Region 2 (the Americas), and 1602 kHz in ITU Regions 1 (Europe, northern Asia and Africa) and 3 (southern Asia and Oceania). In Region 2, this consists of ten additional frequencies, spaced 10 kHz apart, and running from 1610 kHz to 1700 kHz. In Regions 1 and 3, where frequency assignments are spaced nine kHz apart, the result is eleven additional frequencies, from 1611 kHz to 1701 kHz. North American Regional Broadcasting Agreement
The North American Regional Broadcasting Agreement (NARBA, es, Convenio Regional Norteamericano de Radiodifusión) refers to a series of international treaties that defined technical standards for AM band (mediumwave) radio stations. These agreements also addressed how frequency assignments were distributed among the signatories, with a special emphasis on high-powered clear channel allocations. The initial NARBA bandplan, also known as the "Havana Treaty", was signed by the United States, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti on December 13, 1937, and took effect March 29, 1941. A series of modifications and adjustments followed, also under the NARBA name.
