WKPT (AM)
WKPT (1400 AM) is a North American radio station, located in Kingsport, Tennessee. It operates with a daytime/nighttime power of 1,000 watts. WKPT is one of the oldest radio stations in East Tennessee, first taking the airwaves in 1940. Programming WKPT (AM) broadcasts an all-sports format featuring programming from ESPN Radio. Local programming features "Sports Magazine," hosted by sports director Scott Gray, on Monday evenings. "Sports Magazine" has been a fixture on the station for more than two decades. WKPT (AM) has long been the home of Dobyns-Bennett (Kingsport) High School sports, heard on the flagship frequency of 1400 kHz and its translator at 94.3 FM. WOPI (1490 AM) is a sports formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Bristol, Tennessee, and Bristol, Virginia, United States. WOPI is owned and operated by Glenwood Communications Corporation though subsidiary Holston Valley Broadcasting Corporation. History WOPI signed on June 15, 1929 at State and 22nd Streets in Bristol, Tennessee, as the first radio station in the Tri-Cities. W.A. Wilson, former chief telegraph operator for Western Union's Bristol office, came up with the plan for a radio station when he spent several years selling and installing radios. His son James C. Wilson worked at WOPI and later bought the station which is now WJCW. An early show on the station was "WOPI Jamboree", which featured live country music. In the 1940s, WOPI and WKPT formed a network called "the Sister City Network" for broadcasting local information. WOPI-FM signed on Christmas Day 1946 as the area's first FM station. WVEK-FM is a classic hits formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Weber City, Virginia, serving the Tri-Cities area. WVEK-FM is owned and operated by Glenwood Communications Corporation, through subsidiary Holston Valley Broadcasting Corporation. History WVEK went on the air as WSEH on July 26, 1991 and was owned by Cumberland City Broadcasting. On May 26, 2005, WSEH switched its calls to WVEK-FM and its format to classic rock.
