WRTA (1240 Hertz, kHz) is a All-news radio, news/Talk radio, talk/Sports radio, sports formatted Broadcasting, broadcast radio station licensed to Altoona, Pennsylvania, serving Altoona, Pennsylvania, Altoona and Blair County, Pennsylvania. WRTA is owned and operated by Matt Lightner, through licensee Lightner Communications LLC. History WRTA began broadcasting June 18, 1947, on 1240 kHz with 250 W power. The station was an American Broadcasting Company, ABC affiliate and was owned by Roy Thompson. Roy Thompson sold WRTA to the Altoona Trans Audio Corporation in March 1956. The Altoona Trans Audio Corporation was composed of Martin J. Malarkey, Jr., John L. Miller, Horace Richards, and Louis "Lou" Murray. Altoona is a city in Blair County, Pennsylvania. It is the principal city of the Altoona Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The ''Altoona Mirror'' is a daily newspaper located in Altoona, Pennsylvania. It is the hometown newspaper for Altoona and serves all of Blair County as well as parts of surrounding counties. History The newspaper was founded on June 13, 1874 as ''The Evening Mirror'' by Harry E. Slep and George J. Akers (Slep & Akers Company). Akers left the company in 1877, leaving Slep as the sole owner. Mr. Slep's eldest son, William H. Slep, eventually joined the business and the firm became known as H. & W.H. Slep Company. The ''Clearfield Progress'' is a daily newspaper serving Clearfield in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1913 as successor to the Clearfield Herald. It has a circulation of about 12,000 and is published six days a week. History This newspaper was originally a vehicle for progressive politics and the " Bull Moosers", and the 1913 change in ownership and renewed focus led to an immediate jump in subscribers. The Altoona Curve are a Minor League Baseball team based in Altoona, Pennsylvania, named after nearby Horseshoe Curve (but also alluding to the curveball, a type of pitch). The team plays in the Eastern League and is the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
