WRIQ (89.7 MHz) is a National Public Radio formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Charles City, Virginia, serving the Richmond/Petersburg area. WRIQ is part of the Radio IQ network, simulcasting the NPR news and talk programming of flagship WVTF. WRIQ is owned by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) through its fundraising arm, the Virginia Tech Foundation. History American Family Association launched the station as WAUQ in 2000, relaying its American Family Radio network which featured a mix of Christian teaching and Contemporary Christian music. On August 18, 2015, Educational Media Foundation purchased the station from the American Family Association for $1.25 million. WVTF
WVTF is the National Public Radio affiliate serving most of southwestern Virginia. The station is licensed to Roanoke, Virginia, and owned by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) through its fundraising arm, the Virginia Tech Foundation. It airs a format of news and talk programming from NPR, BBC World Service, Public Radio International and other outlets. WVTF broadcasts in HD. History WVTF began broadcasting in August 1973 as WVWR-FM (Virginia Western Radio) and was licensed to Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke. It was used primarily to air college telecourses and give broadcasting students a chance to hone their skills. Wise, Virginia
Wise is a town in Wise County, Virginia, United States. The population was 3,286 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wise County. It was originally incorporated as the town of Gladeville in 1874. The town's name was changed to Wise in 1924, after Henry A. Wise, the last Virginia governor before the American Civil War and the first governor to hail from the Eastern Shore of Virginia. HD Radio
HD Radio (HDR) is a trademark for an in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcast technology. It generally simulcasts an existing analog radio station in digital format with less noise and with additional text information. HD Radio is used primarily by AM and FM radio stations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with a few implementations outside North America. The term "on channel" is a misnomer because the system actually broadcasts on the ordinarily unused channels adjacent to an existing radio station's allocation. This leaves the original analog signal intact, allowing enabled receivers to switch between digital and analog as required. In most FM implementations, from 96 to 128 kbps of capacity is available. High-fidelity audio requires only 48 kbps so there is ample capacity for additional channels, which HD Radio refers to as "multicasting". Lexington is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. At the 2020 census, the population was 7,320. It is the county seat of Rockbridge County, although the two are separate jurisdictions. WKYV's transmitter is located off Johnson Road in Petersburg. WLFV's transmitter is off Basie Road in Henrico, Virginia. History WJMA-FM signed on November 22, 1971, on 96.7 MHz from Orange, Virginia. It was co-owned with WJMA (1340 AM, now WVCV).
