WKLT 97.5 Kalkaska (Traverse City), WBCM 93.5 Boyne City (Petoskey) and WRGZ 96.7 Rogers City (Alpena) are classic rock-leaning mainstream rock stations simulcasting as "KLT The Rock Station". The stations serve all of northern lower Michigan from Traverse City to Alpena. History The station was started by Roy Henderson in April 1979 at 97.7, playing a CHR/Top 40 format as "Kilt 98". Due to its limited signal, the station found it difficult to compete with the high-powered WJML-FM and WKHQ, and so in 1981 the station changed format to automated country as "Country 98". The station added an AM station at 1420 in 1982, which simulcasted the FM's format. The AM station, WKLT, was a 500-watt daytimer. Alpena, Michigan
Alpena ( ') is the only city in and county seat of Alpena County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 10,483 at the 2010 census. After Traverse City, it is the second most populated city in the Northern Michigan region. The city is surrounded by Alpena Township, but the two are administered autonomously. It is the core city of the Alpena micropolitan statistical area, which encompasses all of Alpena County and had a total population of 28,360 at the 2010 census. WATZ-FM (99.3 FM, "99.3 WATZ") is a radio station broadcasting a country music format. The station is licensed to the city of Alpena. WTCM (580 kHz) is an AM radio station broadcasting in Traverse City, Michigan. It is owned by the Biederman family and their company, Midwestern Broadcasting. Today, WTCM, along with sister WTCM-FM is at or near the top of the Arbitron ratings, and are part of a dying breed of family-owned-and-operated radio stations. Rogers City, Michigan
Rogers City is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Presque Isle County. The city is adjacent to Rogers Township, but is politically independent. Rogers City is located on Lake Huron and is home to two salmon fishing tournaments. The world's largest open-pit limestone quarry, the Port of Calcite, is located within the city limits and is one of the largest shipping ports on the Great Lakes. The freighter, , home port at Rogers City, sank in Lake Michigan on November 18, 1958. WZTK (105.7 FM) is an American radio station stunting with a Christmas music format. The station is licensed to the city of Alpena, Michigan. The station is currently owned by Midwestern Broadcasting Company. History WZTK was issued its broadcast license by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on July 30, 2014. WZTK signed on the air at 105.7 FM on June 26, 2014. The station assumed the talk radio format and programming that formerly aired on WATZ, whose license was surrendered to the FCC on July 7, 2014. WZTK is locally owned and operated by the same company that founded WATZ in 1946. WTCM-FM 103.5 is a radio station in Traverse City, Michigan. The station carries a country music format and is owned by Midwestern Broadcasting. History In 1939, WTCM founder Les Biederman and several of his friends - engineer Bill Kiker and Drew McClay among others - decided to start a radio station in an undeveloped radio market. They chose Traverse City, Michigan as a city destined for growth which had no local radio station. They moved to the city and built the 250-watt transmitter that would be Traverse City's first radio station. WTCM initially broadcast from a small studio at the base of the tower. The WTCM control console was hand-built by Biederman and Kiker, and served the station until its replacement around 1980. WJZQ 92.9 Cadillac/Traverse City is a 100,000-watt radio station broadcasting a Top 40 (CHR) format as ''Z93''. It is owned by Ross Biederman's Midwestern Broadcasting, who also owns WTCM-AM/ FM and WCCW- AM/ FM, all in Traverse City, MI. WWTV-FM and WKJF-FM WJZQ was originally WWTV-FM, co-owned with WWTV, then at channel 13. It was signed on in 1961 by John Fetzer, a well-known TV station owner in the midwest and a longtime owner of the Detroit Tigers baseball team. The station's transmitter was on the fabled "Fetzer Mountain" in Osceola County, which was one of the highest points in Michigan.
