WPYO (95.3 FM), is a radio station licensed to Maitland, Florida. The station airs a Spanish contemporary hits format, and is branded as "El Zol 95.3.” Owned by Spanish Broadcasting System, it serves the Greater Orlando area. The station's transmitter is located in Pine Hills. History Prior to Cox Enterprises buying the station in 1999, the station was WTLN-FM, a contemporary Christian outlet. But after the sale that same year, on January 15, it flipped to Dance Top 40 as ''95.3 Party'', and became a success in the market with its mix of dance and hip-hop music. By 2004, the station had shifted to a hip-hop-driven direction, and rebranded as rhythmic contemporary ''Power 95.3'', restoring the format to Orlando since the flip of WJHM (now WQMP) to urban contemporary in the 1990s (WJHM returned to Rhythmic in 2012, but changed to CHR in 2014). WQMP (101.9 FM) is a radio station licensed to Daytona Beach serving the Orlando and Space Coast areas of Central Florida. Owned by Audacy, Inc., it broadcasts an alternative rock format branded as "FM 101.9". Its studios are located in Maitland and the transmitter is in Orange City. To the north, the station can be heard as far as St. Augustine, to the south, the station can be heard as far as Palm Bay and is one of the few Orlando stations that covers Ocala. WSUN (97.1 MHz) is a commercial FM radio station, licensed to Holiday, Florida, and serving the Tampa Bay Area. The station is owned by Spanish Broadcasting System, and airs a Spanish contemporary hits format branded as "El Zol 97.1". The transmitter site is off Dartmouth Drive in Holiday. History The station signed on September 1, 1978, on the 106.3 FM frequency as WHBS, a station that served primarily Pasco and northern Pinellas Counties. The station later became WVTY, then WLVU, carrying an easy listening format and later adult contemporary. In 1998, the station would relocate to 97.1 FM (swapping frequencies with Citrus County's WXOF), to better reach the Tampa Bay market. WCFB (94.5 MHz) is a commercial FM radio station licensed to Daytona Beach, Florida, serving the Greater Orlando area. WCFB is owned by Cox Radio and airs an urban adult contemporary radio format. Its studios and offices are located on North John Young Parkway in Orlando. On weekdays, WCFB carries the syndicated Rickey Smiley Morning Show, as well as an hour of urban contemporary gospel music at 5 a.m., and a Quiet Storm program at night. The station has a powerful 100,000 watt Class C signal, heard from St. Augustine to Ocala to Kissimmee. Urban contemporary music, also known as urban music, hip hop, urban pop, or just simply urban, is a music radio format. The term was coined by New York radio DJ Frankie Crocker in the early to mid-1970s as a synonym for Black music.
