WPWZ (95.5 FM) is a radio station broadcasting an urban contemporary format. Licensed to Pinetops, North Carolina, United States, it serves the Rocky Mount area. The station is currently owned by First Media Radio. History WEQQ signed on in the 1990s, simulcasting the hot adult contemporary music WEQR. The station picked up the country music format and WKTC call letters of what is now WPLW-FM in 1998. Urban Contemporary
Urban contemporary music, also known as urban music, hip hop, urban pop, or just simply urban, is a music radio format. The term was coined by New York radio DJ Frankie Crocker in the early to mid-1970s as a synonym for Black music. Urban contemporary radio stations feature a playlist made up entirely of Black genres such as R&B, pop-rap, quiet storm, urban adult contemporary, hip hop, Latin music such as Latin pop, Chicano R&B and Chicano rap, and Caribbean music such as reggae and soca. Urban contemporary was developed through the characteristics of genres such as R&B and soul. Russ Parr (born 1959 in California) is an American radio DJ, film director, writer, actor and television personality known for such television shows as '' Rock 'N' America''. Career Parr began as a Production Services Director at ABC TV. Russ was the morning DJ on KDAY doing imitations of Magic Johnson, Ronald Reagan and other celebrities. He also worked as a stand-up comic for eight years, performing his first show as an opening act for Joan Rivers in Santa Monica, California. Parr also found parts on a number of television shows including ''Martin'', ''The Jenny Jones Show'', and ''Turnstyle'', and appeared in television commercials for Kodak and McDonald's. WKJO (102.3 MHz) is a classic hits formatted radio station licensed to Smithfield, North Carolina. The station is owned by Curtis Media Group, and simulcasts the "KIX 102, Carolina's Greatest Hits" programming of hit music from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s that originates from WKIX-FM (102.9) in Raleigh.
